Nat Geo Exec Tapped For Obama Cabinet Post

Garcia is currently Executive Vice President for Mission Programs at the National Geographic Society. In that role, he is responsible for the annual management of more than 400 scientific, conservation and exploration projects, and formerly worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration during the Clinton Administration.

At NOAA, he was in charge of putting into place the restoration plan for Alaska and the Prince William Sound after the Exxon Valdez spill; he served on a similar commission in June of last year after the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
