MSG Showcases Phase Two of Garden's Long Term Transformation

Madison Square Garden has completed two parts of its extensive remodeling project. The second phase of the "Transformation" is being turned into a week-long special on MSG Network. To complete the second phase of the Transformation, this past summer, there were more than 1,000 construction workers at The Garden on a daily basis, around the clock until the Knicks’ opening night game against the Miami Heat. MSG Network was there every step of the way to give viewers a backstage pass. The series, voiced by actor Billy Crudup, also shines a light on the people that made The Garden reborn. There were the famous Garden moments gone by, reenacted one more time. For example, former Knick Larry Johnson showed workers where his famous 4-point play was made in the 1999 Eastern Conference Finals. Stephane Matteau was on hand to discuss one of the greatest moments in Rangers' history, his winning goal lifting the Blueshirts to the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals. Adam Graves, former wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper and former New York Governor Mario Cuomo are among the interviewed guests during the show. Boxing great Bernard Hopkins, who fought and won two champion bouts at MSG, participates in the series. “When you come to Madison Square Garden, you know you’re fighting in a sacred place, and you can’t say that about many places,” Hopkins says. “I’m glad that I’m one of the fighters that had a chance to leave some of my sweat here.” One other notable homecoming is also captured in the series: the return of The Garden’s beloved blue seats in the upper bowl. After a more than 20-year absence, a portion of the seats famous for some of New York’s most notorious chants come back in the exact same color as the original seats from the 1970s and 1980s.
