Mr. Affleck Goes to Washington

It's Ben Affleck's fourth time in front of a Senate subcommittee.

“Thanks for having me follow the greatest and most important philanthropist in the history of the world,” said Ben Affleck as he started his appearance before the Senate Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs. Ben, so humble. Is this an advance apology for the fact that it is you, and not Bill Gates‘s Foundation, which will grace the heds and ledes of news items today?

Officially, it was not Ben Affleck, actor, who appeared, but Ben Affleck, founder of the Eastern Congo Initiative, the advocacy and grant-making organization he started in 2010. He was there asking the Senate to encourage the Obama administration to appoint a new Special Envoy to the region, a position vacated recently by former Wisconsin senator Russ Feingold, who may be staging a Senate comeback.
