Turner to Cut 10 Percent of Workforce (TVNewser) As part of Turner 2020, the cost-cutting and reorganization plan announced earlier this year, the parent company of CNN, HLN, TBS and others has announced it plans to cut 1,475 jobs. CNNMoney Turner Broadcasting, a unit of Time Warner Inc., will cut its total workforce by about 10 percent in the coming weeks through a mix of buyouts, layoffs and other measures, the company said Monday. Capital New York The headcount reduction will include buyouts of staff over the age of 55, layoffs and unfilled open roles. Staff that will be laid off will be informed within the next two weeks. That number also takes into consideration the addition of 150 new jobs in "growth areas" at the company. THR The cuts will come at all levels from across the news, entertainment, kids, young adult and sports networks and businesses as well as corporate functions, in 18 Turner locations around the world. About 300 positions will be eliminated within CNN Worldwide, or about 8.5 percent of the roughly 3,500-strong workforce. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes is under pressure to show Wall Street the company can deliver growth -- and a higher stock price -- on its own. Peter Canellos Named Politico Executive Editor (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media) Peter Canellos has been named executive editor of Politico, editor Susan Glasser announced in a memo to staff Monday morning. FishbowlNY Canellos, a 26-year veteran of The Boston Globe, announced he was leaving the Globe last month. Canellos was named the Globe’s editorial page editor in 2009. Prior to that he served as the paper’s Washington bureau chief. FishbowlDC Glasser was promoted from editor of Politico Magazine to Politico’s editor in September following the resignation of executive editor Rick Berke earlier that month. NYT Berke’s resignation came as Politico announced plans to expand in Europe, in partnership with the German publisher Axel Springer, and suggested it might expand across America. [emailonly]{{{ jodslot01 }}}[/emailonly] Gwyneth-Martha Feud Heats Up With Gersh Hiring (New York Post) The rivalry between domestic diva Martha Stewart and Gwyneth Paltrow amped up Monday when the Oscar-winning actress hired Lisa Gersh to be the CEO of Goop, her fledgling lifestyle and e-commerce company. FishbowlNY Gersh left Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in 2013 after two years. At the Goop end, she replaces Sebastian Bishop. Adweek Reports noted that the abrupt departure of British entrepreneur Bishop was tied to disagreements over Goop's future direction, with Paltrow wanting to use it for personal announcements and Bishop wanting to keep the two separate. Goop representatives at the time denied that was the cause. But, dissenters are speaking up about the celebrity-forward strategy, including Martha Stewart who told Net-A-Porter's Porter magazine that Paltrow should stick to acting -- in not-so-nice terms. NYT Gersh also was a co-founder of Oxygen Media. During Gersh’s tenure as chief executive of Martha Stewart Living she laid off about 70 employees -- 12 percent -- of the nearly 600 at the company. She also cut two of the company’s four magazines. Jeff Bezos' New Plan for News: WaPo Becomes an Amazon Product (Bloomberg Businessweek) Jeff Bezos wants to turn The Washington Post into a national publication, and he’s going to use his other company -- Amazon.com -- to help achieve that goal. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media The Post is creating a Kindle-friendly application that will curate its articles, columns and photography into a tablet-magazine format. The application will initially be free for Kindle owners and pre-installed on Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet, which is expected to launch later this fall. It will eventually be available for download on other tablets, like the iPad. GigaOM The effort is being run by Kerry Lauerman, former editor-in-chief of Salon magazine. Disney Backs $1.25 Billion Euro Disney Funding Deal (THR) Euro Disney, the operator of Disneyland Paris, on Monday announced plans for a $1.25 billion funding deal backed by the Walt Disney Co., its largest shareholder with a 40 percent stake. The deal is designed to strengthen the theme park arm's financial position amid declining visitors and rising debt. Variety The plan calls for Disney to deliver a $526 million cash infusion and convert $750 million in debt to equity. Disney will also defer payment from Disneyland Paris of certain loans until 2024. The recapitalization plan will hack its debt ratio down to six times annual cash flow, compared to 15 times cash flow at present. WSJ Walt Disney also will offer to buy out minority shareholders at €1.25 a share, under French stock-market regulations. That would be well less than Euro Disney’s price of €3.46 a share before Monday’s announcement and its 1995 peak of €152. Mohn said Mayor will manage the daily operations of the organization. Wilson leaves after six years, two as chief content officer. Iran Frees Wife of WaPo’s Tehran Correspondent, But He Remains in Custody (The Washington Post) An Iranian journalist detained in Iran since July along with her husband, the Washington Post’s bureau chief in Tehran, has been released from custody, a family member said Sunday. While Yeganeh Salehi was freed on bail in the middle of last week, her husband, Jason Rezaian, remains imprisoned, his brother, Ali, wrote in an email. HuffPost / AP Rezaian has American and Iranian citizenship. The two were detained along with two other journalists on July 22. The two other reporters were later freed. Tapper, Blitzer to Moderate FL, NH Debates (TVNewser) CNN is partnering with two local stations to simulcast two upcoming political debates. Twin Peaks Revival to Air on Showtime in 2016 (Variety) Twin Peaks, the ABC series that was a forerunner of today’s offbeat serialized cable dramas, is coming back to life with nine new episodes to air on Showtime in 2016. Series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost are working away on the scripts, with Lynch planning to direct all nine episodes.
