KCPQ Will Pay More to Stay With Fox (TVSpy) Tribune Media has signed an affiliation agreement with 21st Century Fox to keep Seattle’s KCPQ on as a Fox affiliate until July 2018. Deadline Hollywood Last month Fox said that it would withdraw its programming on Jan. 17. It wanted more lucrative terms from -- or possibly to buy -- the station in the home of the NFL’s 2014 Super Bowl champions. Tribune says that it will “pay additional programming fees to Fox for the primetime and sports content provided by the network” beginning in January. New York Post Tribune said that even with the stepped up fees, the station would deliver pretax profits in excess of last year’s $13 million. The new deal gives Fox a bigger cut of the revenue from Tribune’s carriage agreements with cable companies and other pay-TV providers. Station owners kick back some of their fees to the network. With the soaring cost of sports rights, the networks are leaning harder on their affiliates to recoup some of their programming costs. Variety During the dispute, Fox even went so far as to start the process of acquiring another station on the edges of the Seattle market to ramp up the pressure on Tribune to hand over KCPQ. The Fox O&O group orchestrated a similar station swap with Cox Media in the San Francisco market earlier this year. WSJ Fox, which paid for the broadcast rights to the NFL’s National Football Conference, had set out to own more television stations in markets where there is an NFC team, such as the Seattle Seahawks. Those stations tend to have high ratings, and by owning them outright rather than contracting with affiliate stations owned by other companies, Fox is able to collect more of the fees that pay-TV operators pay these local stations -- not to mention local advertising dollars. Snapchat Announces That Ads Are Coming (THR) The ad-free days of Snapchat are over. The photo-messaging app announced Friday that it will start running advertisements. The ads began appearing on the service over the weekend. Adweek Snapchat said ads will show up in the "recent updates" feed that show users a list of the latest messages. The L.A.-based startup, worth about $10 billion with investor interest from companies including Yahoo!, has been slowly teasing its advertising potential for a couple weeks. CEO Evan Spiegel announced ad plans at a Vanity Fair tech conference earlier this month. TechCrunch The ads are opt-in, in that you don’t actually have to watch them if you don’t want to. After viewing, or within 24 hours, they disappear from your inbox. However, users have no control over whether or not they actually receive the ads. The company also explained why it's introducing ads: “We need to make money.” Re/code Universal Studios was the first advertiser to pay for ad space within Snapchat -- a movie trailer for the upcoming Universal Pictures horror film Ouija, which comes out Friday. CNN Withdraws Support of NABJ (TVNewser) NABJ president Bob Butler told the board of the black journalists’ association Friday that CNN has withdrawn its support for NABJ’s 2015 Convention & Career Fair. Mediaite Two weeks ago, the NABJ expressed its concerns with, in all the big CNN layoffs, “the departure of so many African Americans.” Butler called that a “worrisome” development for CNN, diversity-wise. According to a press release from NABJ, CNN contacted Butler after his comments two weeks and “informed him the association’s request for support was denied.” Butler said he’s “severely disappointed” that CNN ended their partnership for the 2015 fair. The NABJ has previously criticized CNN on the diversity issue, as well as other networks and news outlets. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Over the past few years, several black anchors have left CNN, and last week CNN laid off one of the highest-ranking African Americans at the network, vice president and northeast bureau chief Darius Walker. In a statement on Friday afternoon, CNN said it had not made a final decision yet on its partnership with NABJ. [emailonly]{{{ jodslot01 }}}[/emailonly] NYT’s Sulzberger: Cuts Are ‘Painful’ (FishbowlNY) During a talk at NYU, Arthur Sulzberger Jr. -- the New York Times’ publisher -- told the audience that the layoffs and buyouts currently making their way through the paper are “painful.” Capital New York Roughly two-dozen business-side jobs were eliminated earlier this month with a limited number of buyouts also on the table. The newsroom is seeking to eliminate 100 positions, ideally through voluntary buyouts, marking the paper's fourth editorial culling since the first such downsizing in its history took place six years ago. HuffPost Sulzberger noted Thursday that despite the layoffs, the Times actually has more journalists in its total headcount today than ever before. Indeed, hundreds of positions have been cut from the Times in recent years, and yet the paper still employs about the same number of people -- 1,330 -- as it did in early 2008. The difference is that while other papers have also cut jobs as a result of the decline in print, the Times has continued to hire new employees to fill roles in expanding areas like video, digital and mobile. Vice Media Expands News Channel to Seven New Countries (The Guardian) Vice Media is to expand its news channel to seven new countries including Germany, Brazil and Australia. The New York-based digital media company is to launch local-language editions and newsrooms in each of the new countries, which include France, Spain and Mexico, in a rapid rollout since launching in the U.S. and U.K. in March. HuffPost Each of the new editions of Vice News will feature "in-depth video and editorial content, including international reporting, recurring franchises, short-form and feature-length documentaries, Vine and Instagram, and live-streaming" from major events, the company said in a release. Variety The announcement comes after Vice received $500 million in funding from A+E Networks and venture-capital firm Technology Crossover Ventures. Vice News claims that it has been the fastest-growing news channel in YouTube’s history with nearly 150 million video views and more than 1 million subscribers to date. The Walking Dead Premiere Climbs Past 22 Million Viewers With DVR (THR / The Live Feed) It's been a banner week for The Walking Dead. After breaking more records with its fifth season premiere on AMC, TV's top series solidified its year-to-year gains in the first round of time-shifting. Live-plus-three ratings made available on Friday have The Walking Dead climbing to 22.37 million viewers -- that's up 29 percent from the original score last week and a 10 percent improvement from the comparable number last season. Variety Among all primetime programs this fall, only The Big Bang Theory (22.82 million) and Sunday Night Football (22.77 million) have drawn more total viewers in Live-plus-three. Walking Dead moved ahead of CBS’ NCIS (21.52 million in L+3) after lagging the veteran crime drama in the same-night numbers. In adults 18-49, the 11.4 rating for The Walking Dead towers over everything else to air in primetime this fall. [emailonly]{{{ sbox01 }}}[/emailonly] Condé Nast Cuts 50 on Business Side (WWD / Memo Pad) Condé Nast has let go of just over 50 corporate employees, which amounts to at least a 25 percent reduction of its media department. The layoffs confirm rumors of budget cuts at the New York-based company. FishbowlNY As expected, the layoffs came under the watch of relatively new CMO Edward Menicheschi. The former Vanity Fair publisher has only been on the job for three months. Unfortunately for Condé staffers, the layoffs probably aren’t over. Magazine publishers are meeting with president Bob Sauerberg on Tuesday. If the publishers aren’t hitting their budgets, more cuts are likely on their way. Russell Brand Threatened With Arrest Outside Fox News Studios (THR) Russell Brand's feud with Sean Hannity continues. After Hannity canceled Brand's scheduled appearance on his show, Brand showed up outside the Fox News headquarters in NYC and started filming an episode of his webcast The Trews. Variety His filming was disrupted when a security guard approached him and instructed him to leave. Brand asked the security guard who the building belonged to, and the man replied that it didn’t matter. “Do you want to get arrested?” the security guard asks Brand. Association of National Advertisers to Acquire Business Marketing Association (NYT) For the second time in five months, a venerable marketing trade association is acquiring another. The Association of National Advertisers in New York, founded in 1910, has agreed to acquire the Business Marketing Association in Naperville, Ill., which was founded in 1922. The two associations announced the agreement Friday morning. AdAge The BMA, with more than 2,500 members nationwide in 17 chapters, is the largest business-to-business marketing association in the U.S., the ANA said in a statement. Of the ANA's 630 member companies, representing 30,000 marketers, 160 companies are B-to-B marketers. Fox News Latino Sees Viewer Spike (TVNewser) Fox News Latino delivered its best month in nearly two years (since December 2012), drawing 1.5 million uniques and averaging 6 million combined minutes on the site in September. Compared to the same time last year, the site is up 69 percent in total unique visitors and up 43 percent in the number of total minutes averaged on the site, according to comScore. Renewal Scam Targets NYT Subscribers (FishbowlNY) If you’ve recently received a “renewal notice” from The New York Times, ignore it. It’s a scam. The Times sent out a notice that a variety of “independent solicitation companies” are targeting subscribers to the Times and other publications. The Times stated that there has been no breach of subscriber information. FCC Chairman Hints at Proposal to Define Online Video Services Like MVPDs (Variety) With the groundbreaking news that HBO and CBS would offer standalone streaming services, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler on Friday was asked repeatedly about whether the agency would weigh in on the fast-growing market for online video. “It’s the right question. Stay tuned,” Wheeler teased reporters after the commission’s regularly scheduled meeting. “It’s something we’re very involved in.” Syracuse Disinvites WaPo Photog Over Ebola (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media) Syracuse University rescinded an invitation to Washington Post photographer Michel du Cille over fears concerning du Cille's possible exposure to Ebola in Liberia.
