KCPQ Will Pay More to Stay With Fox (TVSpy)
Tribune Media has signed an affiliation agreement with 21st Century Fox to keep Seattle’s KCPQ on as a Fox affiliate until July 2018. Deadline Hollywood Last month Fox said that it would withdraw its programming on Jan. 17. It wanted more lucrative terms from — or possibly to buy — the station in the home of the NFL’s 2014 Super Bowl champions. Tribune says that it will “pay additional programming fees to Fox for the primetime and sports content provided by the network” beginning in January. New York Post Tribune said that even with the stepped up fees, the station would deliver pretax profits in excess of last year’s $13 million. The new deal gives Fox a bigger cut of the revenue from Tribune’s carriage agreements with cable companies and other pay-TV providers. Station owners kick back some of their fees to the network. With the soaring cost of sports rights, the networks are leaning harder on their affiliates to recoup some of their programming costs. Variety During the dispute, Fox even went so far as to start the process of acquiring another station on the edges of the Seattle market to ramp up the pressure on Tribune to hand over KCPQ. The Fox O&O group orchestrated a similar station swap with Cox Media in the San Francisco market earlier this year. WSJ Fox, which paid for the broadcast rights to the NFL’s National Football Conference, had set out to own more television stations in markets where there is an NFC team, such as the Seattle Seahawks. Those stations tend to have high ratings, and by owning them outright rather than contracting with affiliate stations owned by other companies, Fox is able to collect more of the fees that pay-TV operators pay these local stations — not to mention local advertising dollars.

Snapchat Announces That Ads Are Coming (THR)
The ad-free days of Snapchat are over. The photo-messaging app announced Friday that it will start running advertisements. The ads began appearing on the service over the weekend. Adweek Snapchat said ads will show up in the “recent updates” feed that show users a list of the latest messages. The L.A.-based startup, worth about $10 billion with investor interest from companies including Yahoo!, has been slowly teasing its advertising potential for a couple weeks. CEO Evan Spiegel announced ad plans at a Vanity Fair tech conference earlier this month. TechCrunch The ads are opt-in, in that you don’t actually have to watch them if you don’t want to. After viewing, or within 24 hours, they disappear from your inbox. However, users have no control over whether or not they actually receive the ads. The company also explained why it’s introducing ads: “We need to make money.” Re/code Universal Studios was the first advertiser to pay for ad space within Snapchat — a movie trailer for the upcoming Universal Pictures horror film Ouija, which comes out Friday.

CNN Withdraws Support of NABJ (TVNewser)
NABJ president Bob Butler told the board of the black journalists’ association Friday that CNN has withdrawn its support for NABJ’s 2015 Convention & Career Fair. Mediaite Two weeks ago, the NABJ expressed its concerns with, in all the big CNN layoffs, “the departure of so many African Americans.” Butler called that a “worrisome” development for CNN, diversity-wise. According to a press release from NABJ, CNN contacted Butler after his comments two weeks and “informed him the association’s request for support was denied.” Butler said he’s “severely disappointed” that CNN ended their partnership for the 2015 fair. The NABJ has previously criticized CNN on the diversity issue, as well as other networks and news outlets. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Over the past few years, several black anchors have left CNN, and last week CNN laid off one of the highest-ranking African Americans at the network, vice president and northeast bureau chief Darius Walker. In a statement on Friday afternoon, CNN said it had not made a final decision yet on its partnership with NABJ.
