Cleveland Plain Dealer Cuts Third of Newsroom Staff (AP / The Big Story) The Plain Dealer in Cleveland cut about a third of its newsroom staff Wednesday, months after announcing it was reducing home delivery of the newspaper. About 50 reporters, photographers, page designers and other Newspaper Guild-covered employees received layoff notices, according to the guild. Crain's Cleveland Business Employees were notified Tuesday night to wait by the phone until 10 a.m. Wednesday. If they didn't get a call from the office telling them they were being laid off, they were to report to work at 11 a.m. Among those who got the unfortunate call was business editor Randy Roguski. Others laid off are eligible to apply for jobs at the Northeast Ohio Media Group, a new company that will produce digital content for Cleveland.com. CJR / The United States Project There is still some uncertainty, however, even for those who got the “good call.” One Plain Dealer reporter told me that now that the layoffs have occurred, Advance plans to hire some of the keepers away to the website, Cleveland.com, which is now operated by a separate digital company. The guild “had thought offers for [the] site would come first... coming after layoffs will cut the number of guild members even lower,” said the reporter, who is staying on at the paper. Fox News Sues TVEyes for Copyright Infringement (TheWrap / MediaAlley) Fox News Channel sued TVEyes, a $500-per-month TV and radio broadcast search service, for copyright infringement on Tuesday. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York, alleges TVEyes makes versions of the cable news network's "award-winning programming" available on its site for paid users without Fox News' permission. The lawsuit accuses TVEyes of misappropriating "the entirety of the works that Fox News has developed at great expense and to reproduce, to distribute, to publicly perform and/or to publicly display verbatim copies of the works" without authorization. But the controversy doesn't seem to have hurt newsstand sales. Retail sales of the issue jumped 102 percent over average per-issue sales for the past year, according to Magazine Information Network. Bakersfield Californian Lays Off Its Two Photo Editors (JimRomenesko.com) The Bakersfield Californian [on Tuesday] laid off both of its photo editors: director of photography Alex Horvath, who has been with the newspaper since 2000, and assistant photo Editor Michael Fagans. The paper is left with three staff photographers, but no photo editors. Horvath tells me he was surprised by the layoff. “I did not see it coming,” he writes in an email. Bomb Threats Made on Twitter to Female Journalists (The Guardian) Police are investigating bomb threats made on Twitter against several female journalists, including Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman. At 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday Freeman received a tweet from an anonymous user, @98JU98U989, which claimed that a bomb had been placed outside her home and would be detonated at 10:47 p.m. She reported it to the Metropolitan police, who told her they were launching an investigation as the threat was an arrestable offense. In the original transcription of the interview, Denis Hamill is quoted as asking Weiner, "There is no one you are Sexting now?" To which the former congressman replies, "You can quibble about beginnings, middles and ends, but what we're talking about is over a year ago." The quote, which was cited by several news outlets and widely debated on television, has led to speculation that Weiner was being evasive about the timeline of his sexting habits, and that he might still be sexting. In fact, Weiner was quite clear in telling Hamill that he had not engaged in such activity for at least a year. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service, which operates stores on military bases, announced that it will permanently stop carrying 891 magazine titles due to low demand. Since modern military bases are equipped with WiFi and allow all sorts of digital devices -- iPhones, iPads, Kindles, Android devices, laptops -- it’s easy for soldiers to read magazines online. As a result, demand for niche print magazines has been falling.
