Paris Rally Dominates Global News Coverage (THR) The Paris rally to honor the 17 victims killed during terrorist attacks against the Charlie Hebdo newspaper and a kosher grocery that gripped the country dominated news coverage in Europe and the U.S. Sunday. BBC News Up to 1.6 million are estimated to have taken to the streets of the French capital Sunday. NYT The French police killed three terrorists on Friday in raids, ending three days of bloodshed that shook a nation struggling with Islamic extremists. At least 17 French citizens were killed by terrorists in the chaos, officials said, first in a massacre at Charlie Hebdo, which some Muslims believed insulted the prophet Muhammad, and then in a roadside shooting on Thursday and two standoffs on Friday that left the gunmen and four of their hostages dead. TVNewser NBC News issued an explanation Thursday for the erroneous report that two of the suspects were killed Wednesday night. The ABC A German newspaper that reprinted cartoons of Islamic prophet Mohammed from Charlie Hebdo has been the target of an arson attack. The newspaper, Hamburger Morgenpost, in the northern port city of Hamburg, was attacked on Sunday morning local time. NYT Hires Maggie Haberman (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media) The New York Times has hired Politico senior political reporter Maggie Haberman to anchor First Draft, the site's political news page, and "help drive our campaign news during the day," Washington bureau chief Carolyn Ryan announced Friday. FishbowlDC Haberman, who previously worked at the New York Post, was a lead reporter on the 2012 presidential campaign and, more recently, covered Hillary Clinton‘s potential bid for president in 2016. FishbowlNY Haberman’s appointment is effective Feb. 15. She also worked for the New York Daily News. Capital New York Haberman has long been a Times target. In May 2013, the Huffington Post's Michael Calderone reported that the Times approached Haberman about joining, but she stayed put. Her Politico colleague, Jonathan Martin, however, joined the Gray Lady as national political correspondent. Jack Shafer Joins Politico (FishbowlNY) Everyone’s favorite media critic Jack Shafer is joining Politico. In a memo, Politico’s editor Susan Glasser wrote that Shafer will be penning a regular column on politics and the media. FishbowlDC Shafer, the former press and politics columnist for Reuters, starts Jan. 17. “As we begin the quadrennial follies of a presidential election amid a wave of media disruption, Jack promises to be the indispensable guide to the political tumult, who always calls it like he sees it and whose sharp insights and razor observations come accompanied not only by deeply informed reporting -- but also by a requisite sense of the long history underpinning all this narrative of American political journalism,” announced Glasser in the memo. HuffPost Shafer, who has previously written and edited for Slate, Washington City Paper and San Francisco Weekly, was laid off from Reuters in November. HuffPost Boyhood won Best Motion Picture Drama, one of three awards Richard Linklater's film grabbed on Sunday night. While Boyhood was favored to win multiple awards on Sunday, the 72nd annual Golden Globes included its fair share of upsets. Chief among those were Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel, which earned Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. CNN Shakeup: Alisyn Camerota Replacing Kate Bolduan as New Day Co-Anchor (TheWrap) It’s a new day for CNN’s New Day. Alisyn Camerota -- a longtime Fox News anchor who joined CNN in the summer of 2014 -- has been named co-anchor of New Day alongside Chris Cuomo, a spokesperson for CNN confirmed. TVNewser She will officially start on Jan. 19, but has been filling in for Kate Bolduan, who is on maternity leave. Javi Morgado will be the new executive producer of New Day. Morgado replaces Matt Frucci, who was a victim of CNN’s recent layoffs. THR / The Live Feed When Bolduan returns to CNN, she'll join John Berman as co-anchor of CNN's @This Hour program, which airs at 11 a.m. ET. Camerota joined CNN in July after spending 16 years at Fox News. Conn Carroll Gets Nod as Townhall’s New White House Correspondent (FishbowlDC) Townhall Media announced that its former magazine editor Conn Carroll will be assuming the role of White House correspondent. Carroll, a graduate of George Mason University Law School and former member of the D.C. bar, is the first to occupy the position for the conservative news outlet and will be reporting for its website, Townhall.com. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Carroll said he plans to differentiate himself from other conservative outlets by trying to be more thorough and research-based in his reporting. Carroll said he and Townhall Media vice president and general manager Jonathan Garthwaite had been searching for a while to fill the role of White House correspondent for the organization. When the decision was made to discontinue the magazine, Carroll jumped in. The company is on the prowl for a big digital acquisition, he hinted. FishbowlNY “What we are really focusing on is a very solid digital acquisition strategy. Businesses that can really help us grow in generating digital audiences or services to digital audiences.” As for Townsend himself, he insisted that he intends to be with Condé for a long time. “My contract runs for two-and-a-half years,” said Townsend. “It’s renewable. My health is good, and I love the business.” WaPo Announces New Education Blog, Makes Changes to Education Team (The Washington Post) In a memo posted Friday, The Washington Post announced changes to its education team and the introduction of a new blog, “Grade Point,” which will focus on higher education. Emma Brown, previously on maternity leave, rejoins the paper as a national education reporter. Fox News Takes Total Viewers, CNN Takes Demo During Coverage of Paris Terror Attack (TVNewser) As news of the massacre in Paris began to unfold around 6 a.m. ET Wednesday, most American cable news viewers were tuned to Fox News. The network took total day and primetime in total viewers while CNN drew the most viewers in the younger demo in both total day and in primetime.
