New York Times Amends Carol Vogel Article (FishbowlNY) The first paragraph of Carol Vogel’s July 25 New York Times article no longer reads as it did. The text has been amended and an editors’ note has been added at the bottom. New York Post / Media Ink Vogel is accused of lifting a Wikipedia passage -- with a few minor word changes -- on the artist’s eccentricities for her lede on a July 24 item, “A Renaissance Master Finally Gets A Showcase.” NYT The Times’ editors’ note, which followed an investigation into Vogel’s work by senior editors, said that the passage “improperly used specific language and details from a Wikipedia article without attribution” and should not have been published in that form. HuffPost The Times’ public editor Margaret Sullivan acknowledged the matter Wednesday, writing that there was "little dispute" that the two paragraphs look very much alike. A spokesperson for the Times said that editors are “not aware of any other problems like this,” adding that, “editors have dealt with Carol on the issue." Politico / Dylan Byers on Media It's the second big plagiarism case in the last week. Over the weekend, BuzzFeed fired Benny Johnson after finding more than 40 instances of plagiarism in his work. Two Ex-News of The World Journalists Charged Over Hacking (BBC News) Two former News of The World journalists have been charged with conspiring to hack phones, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said. The defunct newspaper's ex-deputy editor Neil Wallis and ex-features editor Jules Stenson are accused of conspiring to listen to voicemails between January 2003 and January 2007. Reuters Andy Coulson, who edited the paper from 2003 until 2007 before working as Prime Minister David Cameron's media chief, was jailed on July 4 for 18 months for encouraging staff to hack phones in a bid to get exclusive stories. Financial Times The CPS confirmed that both men would appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Aug. 21. In December 2013, the Metropolitan Police submitted evidence to the CPS in relation to Operation Pinetree, its investigation into an alleged conspiracy to hack phone messages by journalists at the World. Additional evidence was provided in June 2014. The file asked for charging advice on eight suspects; all were formerly employed at the World. The Guardian Six other former World journalists arrested last year by officers working on Operation Pinetree were told by the CPS earlier this month that they faced no further action, because of “insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction” on phone hacking-related allegations. AMC Networks Said to Discuss BBC America Stake (Bloomberg) AMC Networks, the cable programmer controlled by the Dolan family, is in talks to acquire almost 50 percent of BBC America, BBC Worldwide’s U.S. channel, people with knowledge of the matter said. Deadline Hollywood The cable network's company, known for its hits The Walking Dead and Mad Men, could use the deal to further establish itself as a leading distributor of premium content -- strengthening its ability to sell ads and negotiate high fees from cable and satellite companies. Variety BBC America, launched in 1998, is owned by BBC Worldwide, the for-profit arm of the U.K. pubcaster. AMC Networks declined comment on the prospect of a deal. BBC Worldwide issued a brief statement: “BBC America has just recorded eight straight years of growth and has never been stronger in brand, ratings, advertising or critical acclaim. We do not comment on market rumors and speculation.” WSJ AMC Networks is a relatively small cable-channel owner whose outlets include the AMC channel as well as SundanceTV and IFC, while BBC America only has the one channel in the U.S. Under the deal being discussed, AMC would represent BBC America in distribution negotiations with pay-TV operators, said a person familiar with the situation, giving BBC America the chance to increase its presence in households and raise the fee it receives from operators. Talks about a deal have been underway for months, the people said. [emailonly]{{{ jodslot01 }}}[/emailonly] NYT Changes Dining Section to ‘Food’ (FishbowlNY) The New York Times is making some changes to its Dining section -- specifically, it is being renamed “Food” and will be edited by Sam Sifton. Capital New York The department will include the dining section and the new NYT Cooking site and app that Sifton has been working on, which is scheduled to debut in the fall. Dining editor Susan Edgerley will be Sifton's deputy. EaterNY Sifton made the announcement on Twitter Wednesday morning, noting that this is the first time the paper has had such a position since the days of Craig Claiborne. DreamWorks Animation Stock Plummets, Analysts Urge Studio to Lower Costs (Variety) After DreamWorks Animation announced its disappointing earnings, reporting a net loss of $15.4 million or 18 cents per share, the studio’s stock was clobbered Wednesday. It fell nearly 15 percent, hitting a 52-week low of $19.20 per share. It closed Wednesday at $19.98 per share. THR The animation studio was also hit Tuesday with multiple threats of class-action lawsuits, which is par for the course nowadays when a stock makes a dramatic plunge. Law firms on Wednesday were referring to the $13.5 million write-down that DreamWorks Animation took in February after its racing snail film, Turbo, disappointed. USA Today The studio has had a string of box office disappointments, including Mr. Peabody & Sherman, but expects How to Train Your Dragon 2 to be a hit. Released June 13, the film has pulled in $166 million in domestic sales; another $258.5 million overseas, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg also warned that there would also be 13 percent higher costs associated with the theatrical release of The Penguins of Madagascar and Home. The tweet read, “School in Gaza hit, 15 dead; kids go missing, no reports made; Ticket me Elmo in #AP10Things: http://t.co/SnmLdWrYXW”. The tweet was later corrected. Poynter / MediaWire On Tuesday it revised a tweet about Gaza. And last Wednesday it revised a clumsily worded tweet that many people misread. “The Elmo cite, included in an @AP tweet because of our ’10 Things to Know for Today’ item about Times Square impersonators, was part of a regrettable juxtaposition,” AP spokesperson Paul Colford said. “We are reviewing our procedures.” A Shorter NYT (Capital New York) The New York Times is considering the introduction of a truncated version of its daily print edition at a discounted rate as the paper mulls new strategies for maximizing the number of people who pay to read its content. Downton Abbey Broadcaster ITV Projects Growth, Will Not Sell Assets (Deadline Hollywood) ITV, the U.K.’s leading -- and highly acquisitive -- commercial broadcaster said Wednesday morning that it’s on track to deliver another year of growth despite a 3 percent drop in viewing figures for the flagship channel over the first six months of 2014. WSJ ITV said Wednesday it is ignoring talk that it is a takeover candidate as it posted a 46 percent jump in profit on higher revenue. Earlier this month, cable group Liberty Global, whose legal headquarters are in London, said it would buy U.K. satellite giant British Sky Broadcasting Group stake in ITV for more than $800 million, further expanding its position in Europe.
