North Korea Refuses to Deny Sony Pictures Cyber Attack (BBC News) Sony is investigating after its computers were attacked and unreleased films were made available on the Internet. When asked if it was involved in the attack, a spokesman for the North Korean government replied: "Wait and see." THR Asked about the cyber attack, a spokesman for North Korea's U.N. mission told BBC News, "The hostile forces are relating everything to the DPRK [North Korea]. I kindly advise you to just wait and see." The FBI said on Tuesday that it is currently part of the investigation into the cyber attack. Variety Among other scenarios, Sony Pictures is looking into the possibility that hackers with ties to North Korea were responsible. That is presumed to be retaliation for the studio’s scheduled Dec. 25 release of The Interview, a geopolitical spoof starring James Franco and Seth Rogen, in which the duo are approached by the CIA about assassinating North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. An unofficial North Korean spokesman decried the film earlier this summer. Mashable A group calling itself GOP (Guardian of Peace) hacked into Sony Pictures Entertainment's website last week, taking down nearly all of its internal systems with it. Nearly a week later, the fruits of the raid are beginning to trickle out into the public. More than 27GB of documents that appear to be from internal Sony Pictures Entertainment file servers have already been leaked. NYT The documents contained the pre-bonus annual salaries of senior executives, 17 of whom are shown earning more than $1 million a year. The breach exposed two things the secretive movie industry loathes the most -- the piracy of films and details about executive compensation -- and sent a ripple of dread across Hollywood. On Pastebin, hackers released what they said were “tens of terabytes” of internal Sony data. The post -- titled “Gift of G.O.P." -- included links to various data archives which appeared to contain Sony employees’ passwords, Social Security numbers, salaries and performance reviews. The studio has offered to enroll employees in a fraud protection program. Executives at the entertainment company said they were also making progress in fighting the apparently related Internet pirating of five complete films, including the unreleased Annie. ABC News Expands Online Video With Launch of GoStream (TVNewser) A day after launching a daily Facebook newscast called “Facecast,” ABC News president James Goldston announced a new initiative: GoStream. If you have the ABC News App, then you’ve already seen the multiple “alerts” about GoStream. Variety The Walt Disney unit, which has digital-distribution alliances with Yahoo! and Apple TV, said it would launch GoStream to allow ABC News correspondents to record and upload footage from events as they happen, letting followers track news live as it unfolds. The ABC News staffers will be able to record and transmit the footage using an app on their mobile devices. Mashable Viewers will be able to choose from any number of feeds during major events, which will not air with a delay. The program could be broadened to include civilians that live stream as well. Live streaming has been embraced as a platform to give first-person accounts of major events. The recent Ferguson protests featured a variety of live streams, like that of citizen journalist Bassem Masri. Vice News has also used live streaming to provide unfiltered looks from the scenes unfolding on the ground in conflict areas. ABC News ABC News will be hiring one digital journalist dedicated to this endeavor, whose job will be to manage, strategize and produce this new content, and respond to breaking and ongoing news domestically and internationally. More NYT Buyouts (FishbowlNY) The list of New York Times staffers taking buyouts continues to grow. The latest include media reporter Christine Haughney and special projects editor Lexi Mainland. Poynter / MediaWire Late-night news editor David Geary, assistant business editor Jack Lynch and photographer Fred R. Conrad have also taken the buyout. Capital New York Douglas Martin, an obituary writer for the Times, automobiles editor James Cobb, Marjorie Connelly, editor of news surveys, Jeffery DelViscio, a senior staff editor on the science desk, and staff editors Ellie Voldstad and Karin Henry are also on the list. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media In October, the Times announced a plan to eliminate some 100 positions in the newsroom through buyouts, and if need be, layoffs. It's part of the Times’ larger effort to stem costs and restructure for a more digital future. After Monday night’s show, the staff gathered in Studio 3B for a champagne toast and cookies. Variety The NBCU unit released a series of archive clips highlighting major moments from the past decade through Nightly’s social media accounts as well as a photo gallery showcasing several of the signature stories the newsman has covered in his tenure. New York Daily News His program has remained the top evening network news broadcast for most of the decade since he took over the chair from Tom Brokaw on Dec. 2, 2004. Like sharks, of course, network news ratings remain in constant motion, with ebbs and flows. For 12 of the past 14 weeks, ABC's new World News Tonight with David Muir has edged into the No. 1 spot among 25- to 54-year-old viewers, the ones advertisers most covet. CBS Sets Dish Blackout Deadline for Thursday if Deal Isn't Made (THR) CBS said Tuesday there will be no more extensions on its negotiations for a retransmission consent agreement with Dish Network and its local and network channels could go dark on the satellite provider as soon as Thursday evening. Variety CBS issued the statement to make it clear to Dish execs that there would be no more extensions. In response to CBS, Dish reiterated its past statement on the negotiations. CBS and Dish execs have been in contact during the past few days and discussions continue. CBS execs are known to be frustrated with what has been described as “foot-dragging” on the part of Dish execs on closing the agreements. Deadline The broadcaster says that after six months of talks, Dish has “not been operating with the same sense of urgency” to make a deal. Dish customers stand to lose access to CBS outlets in 14 cities including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and Detroit. There’s a possibility that an impasse also could endanger carriage of some CW and independent stations and cable networks including Showtime and CBS Sports Network. Amazon Kindle eReader Sales Up 4x on Black Friday (GalleyCat) Kindle sales were up this Black Friday, as compared to sales of the devices last year, Amazon revealed this week. According to the Seattle-based giant, sales of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet were up 3x this Black Friday as compared to last year and Kindle eReader sales were up almost 4x that of comparable sales from last year. AllFacebook The big winner in the 2014 editions of Black Friday and Cyber Monday was Amazon, as the online retail giant was tops in mentions on Facebook and Twitter on both major shopping days, as well as posting the quickest average response time on those days, according to social marketing and analytics platform Engagor. Mashable For brick-and-mortar retailers, there wasn't much to celebrate about Black Friday, but Cyber Monday wasn't very merry, either. Sales rose just 8 percent on what is hailed as the biggest online shopping day of the year, which is less than the 13 percent to 15 percent expected jump, according to IBM. Nevertheless, the five-day "Cyber Week," which lasts from Thanksgiving Day to Monday, set a new record. Sales increased 12.6 percent, according to IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media The show on KSNV-TV, Channel 3 comes to an end after the station was sold to Sinclair Broadcasting Group. Its final airing will be on Dec. 12.
