New ISIS Video Shows Hostage John Cantlie Allegedly Reporting From Kobani (Vice News) In a new video published Monday, British photojournalist John Cantlie, who is now being held hostage by the Islamic State after being kidnapped in Syria in 2012, appears to be reporting from the city of Kobani on the Syrian-Turkish border, which has been the stage to an ongoing battle between the militants and Kurdish forces. HuffPost The five-minute video, which is titled "Inside Ayn al-Islam," shows Cantlie walking in front of destroyed buildings in what appears to be Kobani. After mentioning international reports of Islamic State losses in the battle for the town, Cantlie says Kobani is about to fall completely into the militants' hands. NBC News But U.S. counterterrorism officials said that while the undated video apparently was shot in Kobani, Cantlie’s assertion that ISIS controls large swathes of the city is false. “We don’t know when this was recorded," said one official, who like the others spoke on condition of anonymity. “But to suggest that the ISIL (another acronym for ISIS) is in control of the city now is not accurate.” Mashable It's widely assumed that Cantlie, who's appeared in at least five propaganda videos since he disappeared, is reading from remarks that were prepared by his captors. Having rid the region of all independent journalists, it appears the group is now attempting to broadcast its own twisted form of journalism. The Guardian The video comes two days after the release of another video, in which Cantlie said that captives have been waterboarded for trying to escape. Condé Nast Restructures Digital Team (FishbowlNY) Condé Nast has announced some changes to its digital leadership team. Leading the way is the appointment of Fred Santarpia to executive VP and chief digital officer of Condé Nast. Capital New York The role of chief digital officer is a new one for the magazine publisher, a unit of Advance Publications Inc., that has traditionally kept its titles and their digital content in separate silos. WWD / Memo Pad Two weeks ago, the firm laid off more than 50 in the Media group. Now, the group adds Lisa Valentino, who will expand her role as chief revenue officer at Condé Nast Entertainment to lead digital sales for the Media division. Valentino, who will report to both CNE president Dawn Ostroff and chief marketing officer and president of the Media Group Edward Menicheschi, will partner with senior vice president of sales strategy Josh Stinchcomb. Stinchcomb oversees brand-related efforts, including advertising and revenue partnerships. Variety With the changes in the company’s digital structure, CTO Joe Simon has chosen to leave the company, according to a rep. Santarpia for the past two years has been EVP and chief development officer of Condé Nast Entertainment, where he and his team launched 14 video channels and The Scene, a content-aggregation platform for premium digital video content. Ostroff is expected to name a new GM of digital video to replace Santarpia. Twitter Q3 Earnings: 284 Million Monthly Active Users, $361 Million Revenue, $0.01 EPS (AllTwitter) Twitter’s third quarter earnings for 2014 are out and the all-important monthly active users number is softer than expected, which sent the stock lower. THR Twitter said its monthly active users rose 23 percent to 284 million in the third quarter, though timeline views per user -- a measurement of engagement -- fell 6 percent in the U.S. to 774. Total timeline views globally was 181 billion, just under what analysts had expected. Adweek By comparison, Facebook now has 1.3 billion monthly active users. Twitter gained 13 million new users in Q3 -- though, in the three months prior, it grew by 16 million. Mashable Yet, the company's stock, which had dipped by about 3 percent in trading Monday, fell by more than 10 percent in after hours trading following the results. TVNewser NBC News will provide two one-hour primetime specials on election night, led by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams. News) The FBI has identified an employee of a federal contracting firm suspected of being the so-called "second leaker" who turned over sensitive documents about the U.S. government's terrorist watch list to a journalist closely associated with ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden, according to law enforcement and intelligence sources who have been briefed on the case. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media The so-called "second leaker" is suspected of leaking the documents to "a journalist closely associated with Snowden” -- presumably Glenn Greenwald, who co-authored a report in August on the government's terrorist watchlist. The FBI recently searched the suspect's home and federal prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation, according to Yahoo!'s Michael Isikoff's report. Amazon Adds $39 Fire TV Stick to Its Streaming Video Arsenal (Re/code) Seven months after introducing Fire TV, a streaming video box that competes with boxes from Apple and Roku, Amazon has rolled out the Fire TV Stick, a streaming video dongle aimed at Google’s Chromecast device. Variety The Fire TV Stick, which plugs into the HDMI port on a TV set, provides wireless streaming access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video, YouTube and other video services as well as music, photos, apps and games. The $39 dongle is available for pre-order and will ship Nov. 19. GigaOM The new stick doesn’t require a second device, like a smartphone or tablet, to beam video from. Instead, it comes with a remote and can run apps like Netflix and Prime Instant Video on its own, like the full-sized Fire TV. In that way, it’s more similar to the $50 Roku Streaming Stick than Google’s Chromecast. BuzzFeed Factoring in Live Plus Seven Nielsen ratings, The Flash rose 41 percent -- from 4.79 million, in Live Plus Same Day, to 6.84 million viewers, trumping everything that has aired on the network since its Sept. 2006 launch, according to a press release. Deadline Hollywood The episode jumped 37 percent in Adults 18-34 and 39 percent in Adults 18-49. The series premiere has been seen more than 13 million times across all platforms. Westwood One News Unveils Correspondents (FishbowlNY) Earlier this month, Westwood One announced it was launching its own news service. Now comes the related staffing news. Per an announcement Monday, CNN’s Steve Kastenbaum has been tapped to head up the service’s New York City bureau as senior correspondent. Crossing over in D.C. meanwhile will be NBC News Radio’s Bob Costantini. TVNewser Kastenbaum, a veteran of CNN Radio, which was shuttered last year, has been reporting and field producing for CNN and CNN Newsource. Ex-CBS Reporter: Government Agency Bugged My Computer (New York Post) Sharyl Attkisson, a former CBS News reporter who quit the network over claims it kills stories that put President Obama in a bad light, says she was spied on by a “government-related entity” that planted classified documents on her computer.
