ISIS Reportedly Holding Another Journalist Captive (TVNewser) ISIS released a new video Thursday showing a British journalist as its prisoner. The video, since deleted by YouTube, shows British journalist John Cantlie. HuffPost Cantlie, a former reporter for the Sunday Times, the Sun and the Sunday Telegraph, went missing in Syria in 2012, but was later freed by the Free Syrian Army. Cantlie reportedly then returned to Syria in 2012, along with U.S. journalist James Foley. Foley was beheaded by ISIS in August, a horrific killing that was also recorded and released on video. Reuters In the new roughly three-minute video posted on social media sites, the man identified as Cantlie appears in good health and promises to "convey some facts" in a series of "programs," suggesting there would be further installments. "Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, 'He's only doing this because he's a prisoner. He's got a gun at his head and he's being forced to do this.' Right?" the man in the video, wearing an orange shirt and closely-cropped hair, says. "Well, it's true. I am a prisoner. That I cannot deny. But seeing as I've been abandoned by my government and my fate now lies in the hands of the Islamic State, I have nothing to lose." Mashable He delivers a propaganda message to the West, promising to show "the truth" about the jihadists and stop what he calls the "seemingly inevitable sequence of events" that's taking Western countries to another war in the Middle East. He promises that he will appear in more videos to come. NYT Analysts said that the shift in tone from the previous videos sought to gain maximum exposure and showed how attuned the group is to Western sensibilities in crafting its message. The video, like those before it, seems designed to forestall international military action against the Islamic State. But while the previous videos threatened revenge for attacks, Cantlie’s message seemed crafted to capitalize on reluctance in the West to get involved in a new war. “After two disastrous and hugely unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, why is it that our governments appear so keen to get involved in yet another unwinnable conflict?” he says. Susan Glasser Named Editor of Politico (FishbowlDC) Susan Glasser has been named editor of Politico, according to a memo issued Thursday morning from the Rosslyn-based political news outlet’s CEO Jim VandeHei, editor-in-chief John Harris and COO Kim Kingsley. Adweek Glasser currently serves as editor of Politico Magazine, a title she has held since its November 2013 launch. During her tenure, the publication has won the Aldo Beckman Award, the Gerald R. Ford prize and a local Emmy. HuffPost Glasser’s new mandate gives her “full authority” over Politico’s daily Washington coverage, the magazine and premium subscription service Pro. Harris, who remains editor-in-chief but will focus more on U.S. and European expansion, praised Glasser as a “great, natural editor” and recalled her strong reporting during their days together at The Washington Post. Glasser’s long-standing ties with senior leadership are a key reason she was tapped Thursday to become the news organization’s first editor. BBC Team Attacked in Southern Russia ‘by at Least Three Men' (BBC News) The BBC has lodged a formal protest with the Russian authorities after a news team from the BBC's Moscow bureau was attacked in the south of the country. The Guardian The incident happened after Steve Rosenberg, the BBC’s Moscow correspondent, and a newsgathering team had interviewed the sister of a Russian soldier who had been told he was killed in military exercises “on the border with Ukraine.” According to the BBC, the cameraman involved is continuing to receive treatment for a concussion and other injuries. HuffPost Just before the attack, the crew had left the house of Russian soldier Konstantin Kuzmin's sister, who expressed doubts about the truth behind her brother's death and said she does not believe what Russian military have told her. That suspicion was made even stronger when the staffers later found that the equipment they had left in their car had been "tampered with," with much of their material completely erased. Deadline Hollywood Todd’s Meet The Press tumbled 13 percent in viewers and 19 percent in the news demo in its second week. In total viewers, the show dropped from the previous week’s winning 2.991 million, to 2.589 million. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the 2,100 figure, noting that 747 of those laid off were in Washington state. The remaining cuts were at other Microsoft locations worldwide, the spokesperson said. SocialTimes The first wave of layoffs eliminated 13,000 employees. The cuts are part of CEO Satya Nadella’s plan to make the tech giant “simplify and move faster, more efficiently.” Microsoft stock was up 0.59 percent Thursday afternoon. The glossy, which is edited by Dana Cowin, eliminated six positions on Friday. It is part of a company-wide mandate to “streamline the business” -- or, in other words, cut costs. FishbowlNY The restructuring will allow Cowin to focus more on the digital side of the glossy. The cuts are just the latest moves by Time Inc. CEO Joe Ripp to turn around the now independent publishing house. Time Inc.’s first quarterly report since being shed by Time Warner wasn’t pretty -- it came with a net loss of $32 million. News Corp, Google War of Words Reignites (THR) News Corp, led by chairman Rupert Murdoch, and Google have engaged in a renewed war of words over the Internet giant's market power and role in piracy. The exchange comes amid ongoing antitrust settlement talks between Google and the European Commission and follows a 2012 verbal showdown between Murdoch and the Web search powerhouse. WSJ News Corp has urged Brussels to throw out the settlement and called Google a "platform for piracy." News Corp chief executive Robert Thomson echoed other critics of Google's search functions, saying it "systematically diverts users away from relevant sites to its own related sites for commercial reasons." Thomson's public comments follow similar ones from some European publishing houses. TVGN to Rebrand Itself as POP, Focus on Fans (Deadline Hollywood) TVGN is going for a major makeover. Eighteen months after the cable network, once known as the TV Guide Network, became a joint venture between Lionsgate and CBS, it is being rebranded as POP and redefined as “a multi-platform destination dedicated to celebrating the fun of being a fan” where “fans don’t sit at the outskirts of pop culture making snarky comments, they live right smack in the middle of it.” Variety The theme will allow the new POP to look at anything that draws a coterie of intense adherents, whether it be Comic-Con, Coachella, the Twilight books and movies, or hit TV shows. The strategy does not break with the network’s current operations. But a new identity is critical, said Brad Schwartz, the president of entertainment and media at the network. Even though the “TV Guide” name is no longer part of the network’s identifying marks, people still link TVGN to the TV magazine with which it is no longer associated. New Day at 6 a.m. ET drew 140,000 demo viewers, with MSNBC’s highest demo being Hardball With Chris Matthews at 7 p.m. ET. Hardball drew 128,000 demo viewers. The Rachael Maddow Show was next with 124,000 demo viewers. Telemundo Stations to Add Newscast, Staff (TVSpy) Starting Monday, Nov. 3, Telemundo will launch a weekday 5:30 p.m. half-hour newscast in 14 markets. The NBCUniversal-owned station group also said it will hire nearly 30 employees to support the expanded news schedule. Women's Health Names Amy Keller Laird Editor-in-Chief (WWD / Memo Pad) Women’s Health has promoted acting editor-in-chief Amy Keller Laird to the top job, editor-in-chief. Laird, who has served as Women’s Health’s executive editor for three years, grabs the role following Michele Promaulayko’s departure in August. Entertainment is expected to cut as many as 900 to 1,000 jobs worldwide as part of a studio-wide cost-cutting move, according to people familiar with the company’s plans. The estimated reductions would amount to more than 10 percent of the studio’s 9,000-person workforce. The cuts will be made in late October or early November. Woman's Day, Redbook to Combine Staffs (WWD / Memo Pad) Woman's Day and Redbook, the two Hearst-owned titles, have combined select staff members. Staff from Woman's Day were given the news at a meeting Thursday morning, a source said, adding that among the cuts at Woman's Day were the assistant managing editor, deputy editor and beauty assistant. In June, Hearst president David Carey said that Redbook and Woman's Day would continue to have separate editors-in-chief, but that across the organization’s “mid-range” magazines, “sharing resources” would continue to occur. DreamWorks Taps Lyndsay Harding as CFO (Variety) Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Studios has hired Lyndsay Harding as its new chief financial officer, replacing Larry Wasserman. Jeff Small, president and COO, made the announcement. Wasserman left recently for the same post at David Ellison’s Skydance Productions. The move comes two weeks after veteran TV executive Michael Wright was announced as the new CEO at DreamWorks, replacing Stacey Snider, who will leave the company at the beginning of January.
