Editor Among Those Killed in Terrorist Attack on Paris Magazine (GalleyCat) Stephane Charbonnier, the editor of the weekly news magazine Charlie Hebdo, was among 12 people killed in a terrorist attack on the magazine Wednesday in Paris. TVNewser Three masked gunmen shouting “Allahu akbar!” opened fired at the offices of the French satirical publication in what French President Francois Hollande called, “a terrorist attack without a doubt.” CNN was first among the three major cable news networks to report on the story Wednesday, with a breaking news report of “several dead in France shooting” at 6:13 a.m. ET. Fox News Channel was up next, with an alert at 6:24 a.m. ET. More than 20 minutes after CNN’s report, at 6:39 a.m. ET, MSNBC’s Morning Joe was the first to have White House press secretary Josh Earnest and White House reaction at 7:43 a.m. ET. NBC News had a special report at 6:47 a.m. ET with Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie anchoring from New York. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media CNN is not showing detailed images of cartoons from the Charlie Hebdo magazine that could be viewed as offensive to Muslims, CNN senior editorial director Richard Griffiths said in a message sent to CNN staff Wednesday afternoon. TVNewser An MSNBC spokesperson said, “Our NBC News Group Standards team has sent guidance to NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC not to show headlines or cartoons that could be viewed as insensitive or offensive.” In addition, a Fox News spokesperson said that FNC has “no plans to show the cartoons.” Mediaite French police Wednesday named two brothers in their 30s and a teenage boy claiming affiliation with al Qaeda as the gunmen in the massacre at the offices of the French satirical magazine. NYT Officials said late Wednesday that two of the suspects were brothers. They were identified as Said and Chérif Kouachi, 34 and 32. The third suspect is Hamyd Mourad, 18. News reports said the brothers, known to intelligence services, had been born in Paris, raising the prospect that homegrown Muslim extremists were responsible. Early Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor said that Mourad had walked into a police station in Charleville-Mézières, about 145 miles northeast of Paris, and surrendered. BBC News The two main suspects in the Islamist attack on Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris are said to have robbed a service station in the north of France. They stole food and petrol, firing shots as they struck at the roadside stop near Villers-Cotterets in the Aisne region, French media report. Larry Ingrassia Joins Los Angeles Times (FishbowlNY) Former New York Times deputy managing editor Larry Ingrassia is joining the Los Angeles Times as an associate editor. Ingrassia had served at the NYT from 2004 to September of 2014, when he announced he was leaving amid a shuffling of editors. Poynter / MediaWire At the LAT, Ingrassia will be in charge of new ventures, the paper’s leadership announced Wednesday in a staff memo. Capital New York He will be responsible for leading the LAT’ efforts to convert online readership into revenue, through such initiatives as special events and email newsletters. When Ingrassia announced he had plans to retire from the NYT in late 2014, there was no apparent second act for the journalist who helped develop the digital financial news service DealBook and the technology blog Bits as business editor. NYT At the NYT, Ingrassia had also overseen the unveiling of The International New York Times, which replaced The International Herald Tribune. He was the business editor from 2004 to 2012, during which time the coverage he directed won five Pulitzer prizes. He had previously worked at The Wall Street Journal. FCC Chair Tom Wheeler Accuses Broadcasters of Slowing Spectrum Auction Plans (THR / Behind The Screen) FCC chair Tom Wheeler said he’s optimistic that spectrum auctions would begin in early 2016 as planned, though he was “disappointed that the broadcasters have slowed things down by filing suit.” Variety Wheeler said Wednesday that the commission will vote on a new net neutrality proposal on Feb. 26, with the new rules of the road for the Internet having been circulated to other commissioners earlier in the month. There has been growing speculation on Wall Street and elsewhere that he will undertake an effort to reclassify the broadband Internet as a Title II telecommunications service. At a Q&A with Consumer Electronics Assn. CEO Gary Shapiro, Wheeler all but said that they were moving toward reclassification, but with provisions prohibiting the FCC from imposing more onerous regulations that apply to utilities. Allan comes to CNN from BBC, where he most recently served as managing editor, features. He had been with BBC since 2010. Mediaite Star Talk, which is also the name of the host’s popular podcast, will be taped in front of a live audience at the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium in New York City, where Tyson serves as director.
