Dish Announces OTT Service Featuring CNN, ESPN (LostRemote) At CES Monday, there was big news for cord cutters. Dish announced Sling TV, a streaming service available for $20 a month. Ad Age The service will offer live feeds of sports, news and scripted shows on TVs, computers and mobile devices. Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN, Time Warner's TNT and CNN and others have agreed to supply cable channels. Re/code Dish’s offering, which the company says will launch “soon,” also comes with the ability to add more networks for additional fees. Sling TV is a “personal subscription service,” which means you’ll only be able to watch it on a single device at a time. If you don’t want to watch the shows on your laptop or tablet, you’ll need a device that helps get Web TV to your flatscreen, like an Amazon Fire TV, a Roku box or an Xbox One; you’ll also be able to use a handful of Smart TVs that will support the service at launch. THR This is not an a la carte service (you can’t buy one channel at a time) and it will include the carriage of commercials. It also does not include local TV signals, which means there is no need for Sling TV to pay those huge retransmission license fees. Dish apparently was able to get rights to retransmit ESPN from the Walt Disney Company as part of a larger agreement worked out in May that included retransmission of ABC channels and cable services. It is unclear if all ESPN programming will be available day and date; and there are going to be some live programs that won’t be available on mobile due to a separate agreement Disney’s sports service has with Verizon. NYT Sling TV is part of a growing wave of offerings expected from tech, telecom and media companies in the coming year, posing a threat to the established television business, which takes in $170 billion a year. Meanwhile, the streaming outlets of Amazon, Hulu and Netflix continue to pour resources into developing more robust offerings. Sony, CBS and HBO and others are starting Internet-only subscription offerings. Leon Wieseltier Joins The Atlantic (FishbowlNY) Leon Wieseltier is joining The Atlantic as a contributing editor and critic. Wieseltier comes to The Atlantic from The New Republic, where he had been literary editor for the past 31 years. FishbowlDC At The Atlantic, Wieseltier will be reunited with his former colleague at The New Republic, Ann Hulbert, literary editor of the magazine. James Bennet, president and editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, announced on Monday that Wieseltier will write for both the magazine and the website. Poynter / MediaWire Wieseltier was among the first to announce his departure from The New Republic during a shakeup that included the ousting of then-editor Franklin Foer. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Both Wieseltier and Foer left the magazine in December amid disagreements with the magazine's ownership, which has announced plans to rebrand the century-old institution as a "digital media company." Their departure sparked the resignation of the majority of the magazine's masthead and fierce protest from Washington's political and media establishment. Forbes Announces Media '30 Under 30' (Forbes) Forbes has unveiled its annual “30 Under 30” lists. [emailonly]{{{ jodslot01 }}}[/emailonly] James Risen, in Tense Testimony, Refuses to Offer Clues on Sources (NYT) James Risen, a reporter for The New York Times, took the witness stand in federal court on Monday and refused to answer any questions that could help the Justice Department home in on his confidential sources. Mashable Risen testified at an unusual pretrial hearing in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, where former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling goes on trial next week on charges that he illegally leaked national security information to Risen that the journalist used in his 2006 book, State of War. A chapter in the book details an apparently botched plan to provide Iran with flawed nuclear blueprints through a Russian intermediary. HuffPost / Reuters The terse, and at times combative, testimony prompted a lawyer for Sterling to question whether prosecutors could even proceed with their case. There are many unequivocal statements the government cannot prove without Risen, said Edward MacMahon, a lawyer for Sterling. Sterling was indicted on unauthorized disclosure of national defense information and other charges in 2010. Dianna Heitz Will Leave Politico for CNN (TVNewser) Dianna Heitz, deputy managing editor at Politico, has announced she will leave the site after six years to join CNN, where she will be part of the expanding digital team at CNNPolitics. FishbowlDC In an article last month in The Washington Post, Erik Wemple found that about 25 percent of Politico’s editorial staff turned over in 2014, an alarming rate even for an organization known for its high turnover. Heitz becomes the sixth Politico reporter or editor to leave since the fall, with the most recent departure, MJ Lee, leaving in mid-December to join CNN Politics Digital. Capital New York Politico also announced Monday that it has hired Marilyn Thompson as a deputy editor. Thompson currently serves as Washington bureau chief for Reuters. Fox Breaks Industry Record for Global Box Office (THR) Thanks to a diverse slate that resonated with consumers, Fox set a new industry record at the worldwide box office in 2014. Fox movies generated $5.5 billion in global ticket sales, well ahead of the previous industry record of $5.17 billion set in 2011 by Paramount, and one of the few times that revenue has hit the $5 billion mark. Variety Internationally, Fox grossed $3.73 billion, marking an industry-wide high. The studio’s domestic arm posted $1.79 billion in receipts. That’s not a record for the movie business, but it is Fox’s best year ever. Deadline The studio’s big hitters were X-Men: Days of Future Past ($514 million gross internationally; $233 million domestically; $748 million worldwide) and Dawn of The Planet of The Apes ($500 million internationally, $209 million domestically, $709 million worldwide). The streaming video service says it will start designating some new sets as “Netflix Recommended” this spring. Netflix says it wants to highlight sets that come with “consumer benefits including turning the TV on instantly, faster app launch and faster resume of video playback.” Variety In an announcement timed for CES, Netflix said the initial partners expected to be certified under the program this spring are Sony Electronics, LG Electronics, Sharp Electronics, Vizio and manufacturers of Roku TVs. CNN Debuts ‘Re-Platformed’ CNN.com (TVNewser) Over the weekend, CNN “flipped the switch” on its re-designed website, CNN.com. “It is a total re-platforming of one of the largest and most trafficked sites in the world -- a significant overhaul,” said CNN general manager of digital Andrew Morse in a note to staff Monday morning.
