Condé Nast Moves to 1 World Trade Center (FishbowlNY) The first wave of Condé Nast staffers settled into their new digs at 1 World Trade Center Monday morning. THR Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, the resurrected World Trade Center, a 104-story, $3.9 billion skyscraper that dominates the Manhattan skyline, is opening for business, marking an emotional milestone for both New Yorkers and the nation. The publishing giant becomes the first commercial tenant in America's tallest building. Mashable The building is currently just 60 percent leased. About 170 employees of Condé Nast's 3,400 workers moved into the skyscraper. The rest of the company, which signed a 25-year lease for 1 million square feet, will move there in 2015. New York Post The sparkling new building is the tallest in the Western Hemisphere. It had originally been slated to open in 2006, but cost overruns and political infighting led to delays. Other new tenants include the General Services Administration and the ad firm Kids Creative. NYT The workers that began Monday are what Condé Nast calls corporate employees, meaning that they do not work for any one of its magazines in particular. Some work in human relations, some in accounting. Glamour? It will come later, as will Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and Condé Nast’s other magazines. Tom Magliozzi, Popular Co-Host of NPR's Car Talk, Dies at 77 (NPR) Tom Magliozzi, one of public radio's most popular personalities, died on Monday of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 77 years old. THR Magliozzi was best known as half of the radio show duo Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers, the personas he and his younger brother, Ray, created in 1977 for Boston's NPR affiliate, WBUR. The notoriously self-deprecating duo retired from radio in 2012, after 35 years on air. NPR continues to rerun their popular Car Talk shows. Mashable The Magliozzi brothers ran an auto repair shop in Cambridge, Mass. in the 1970s. The pair got into radio when the local public radio station called Ray and asked him to take part in a panel of auto mechanics. Tom went instead, and the station liked him so much they asked him to return. The weekly show went national on NPR in 1987, with what the station called a "blend of humor, passion, expertise and just plain silliness." New York Post / AP Car Talk executive producer Doug Berman, in a statement, said Magliozzi’s “dominant, positive personality” will be missed. “He and his brother changed public broadcasting forever,” he said. “Before Car Talk, NPR was formal, polite, cautious... even stiff.” Jill Abramson Startup to Advance Writers Up to $100,000 for Long-Form Work (Poynter / Biz Blog) Former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson shed light over the weekend on her plans with Steven Brill to grow a startup. FishbowlNY During an talk at the Journalism And Women Symposium’s annual Conference And Mentoring Project, Abramson said the news venture will produce one feature a month, paying writers up to $100,000 to do so. HuffPost In exchange, the author will be expected to produce "one perfect, great whale of a tale," said Abramson. The story will be available to the company's online subscribers at a cost of about $2.99 per month. The articles will be "longer than long magazine articles" but not quite book length. The Times abruptly fired Abramson earlier this year, triggering a controversial discussion about women in leadership positions and the double standards they face. Stacey Snider Joins 20th Century Fox as Co-Chairman (THR) Film executive Stacey Snider has joined 20th Century Fox as co-chairman of the studio, Fox confirmed. Snider, who was CEO and co-chairman of Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks for eight years, will report to Fox film chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos. Variety In her new role, Snider will oversee all production and development activities for 20th Century Fox, Fox Animation/Blue Sky Studios, Fox International Productions and Fox Searchlight Pictures. Snider had been eyeing a top role at Fox for months but had to wait to wrap up her obligations as CEO and co-chairman of DreamWorks before taking the job. She previously ran two other studios, Universal Pictures and TriStar Pictures, before joining DreamWorks in 2006. Deadline Hollywood Snider was at DreamWorks as a partner with Spielberg, overseeing creative and financial on all film development and production. Cyndi McClellan to Exit as E! President of Strategy (Variety) Cyndi McClellan is exiting her post as president of network strategy for E! Entertainment and E! News after 12 years with the cabler. McClellan let E! staffers know of her decision on Monday morning. Although the cabler saw a management shakeup last month with the departure of prexy Suzanne Kolb, McClellan’s move was her own choice. Deadline Hollywood McClellan joined then-Comcast network E! in 2002 as VP research, spearheading programming acquisitions. She oversaw E!’s acquisition of Sex And The City and helped build E!’s "Movies We Love" franchise with film acquisitions. She was upped to EVP, research & program strategy, Comcast Entertainment Group, evaluating program opportunities for E!, Style and G4. Noonan will contribute across CBS News’ broadcast and digital platforms, with regular appearances on Face, the CBS Evening News and CBS This Morning. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Noonan confirmed the news Monday. She actually started her career at CBS in the late 1970s as a radio news writer and producer, so this is a coming home of sorts. Telemundo Adds Early Evening Newscasts At 14 Owned Stations (TVSpy) Because of an investment from parent company NBCUniversal, 14 Telemundo owned stations are adding a half-hour early evening newscast. Deadline Hollywood The company says that the new newscasts are part of a series of changes that include the addition of stations in San Antonio; Harlingen, Texas; Boston and Philadelphia to the Telemundo Station Group and the hiring of 160 employees primarily for news. Telemundo also opened news bureaus in Washington, D.C., Mexico City and Miami. Masterpiece Adds 20 Hours of U.K. Drama (Deadline Hollywood) In late October, PBS said it finished the 2013-14 TV season ranked No. 5 among all broadcast and cable networks in household ratings. The 5 percent growth from the comparable September 2012-September 2013 period was partly driven by the strong showing of Masterpiece’s Downton Abbey. Masterpiece and PBS now say they are adding at least 20 additional hours of British drama in 2015. Variety Among the new shows coming to the schedule is Grantchester, which has landed the plum post-Downton slot starting Jan. 18. Other Masterpiece entries for 2015 include Wolf Hall, starring Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance as Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell; a remake of the 1970s British TV series Poldark and Indian Summers, set in the 1930s India during the last days of British rule. Six months after he announced his departure from Fox Broadcasting Company, the veteran TV executive is poised to take the creative reins at Turner Entertainment. The job, which will be broader than predecessor Michael Wright's Turner post, will have Reilly focused on cable behemoths TNT and TBS, with additional oversight within the business. U.K. pay TV giant BSkyB, in which Fox owns a 39 percent stake, has struck a deal to acquire Sky Deutschland and Sky Italia from Fox. Participant Media Shakes Up Management of Cabler Pivot (Variety) Evan Shapiro is out and Kent Rees is in as general manager of Participant Media’s cable channel Pivot. Participant announced the shuffle Monday, saying Shapiro had left the company. Rees was previously Pivot’s exec VP of marketing and scheduling.
