The View Premieres With New Co-Hosts, Queen Barbara Walters (TVNewser) A revamped The View premiered Monday morning with its original co-executive producer sitting in a Queen’s throne getting doused with affection. “Thank you my pals,” Barbara Walters said as co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Nicolle Wallace and Rosie Perez looked toward her throne. LostRemote On social media, fans were not really feeling the new View. The biggest complaints were about the new format. Many complained about the new hosts, although Perez was an all-around favorite. THR / The Live Feed Goldberg kicked off the premiere of its 18th season by introducing it as "the newer View,” filmed in an ABC Broadcast Center studio space and featuring a tweaked logo. "We're gonna try a lot of new stuff -- some of it will work and some of it won't, but the thing that will never change is its great conversations with great women." Mediaite O’Donnell caught the audience up with what’s been going on in her personal life since then. They then gave the floor over to Perez and Wallace to introduce themselves. Perez talked about a Broadway show she’s working on and her philanthropic efforts, while Wallace got to share her background in politics and the Bush administration. When Wallace mentioned she was a Republican, O’Donnell piped up, “I really like her, I swear to God!” Variety The audience is more prominent and appears more frequently during the program. A new producer, Bill Wolff, who once oversaw MSNBC’s flagship Rachel Maddow, will now run proceedings. Labor Board Orders CNN to Rehire 100 Fired Employees (Variety) The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ordered CNN to rehire 100 workers and compensate 200 others for a labor dispute that originated in 2003. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media In 2003, CNN replaced a unionized subcontractor called Team Video Services that provided the network with audio and video technicians with an in-house nonunion work force in its Washington and New York bureaus. The NLRB found that CNN failed “to bargain with the union about the decision to terminate the subcontracts,” made “coercive statements” and implemented “a hiring plan designed to limit the number of discharged TVS employees... in order to avoid a successorship bargaining obligation.” ABC News / AP The board gave CNN 14 days to rehire the former TVS employees, which total approximately 100, for "their former positions or, if those jobs no longer exist, to substantially equivalent positions." It also told CNN to pay bargaining union employees for any adverse tax consequences that may result from the lump-sum reimbursements to approximately 200 former workers. A CNN statement said the network disagrees with the NLRB decision and is evaluating options. The Wrap The Communication Workers of America said that the compensation for the other 200 workers, who did not initially lose their jobs but continued working without union benefits or a contract, will come in the “tens of millions of dollars” range, and that CNN must further restore any union work outsourced since the end of the contracts and recognize the union and resume bargaining with its local chapters. This ruling comes in the midst of a massive restructuring at CNN, as revealed by network head Jeff Zucker in a memo last month to company employees. “We are going to do less and have to do it with less,” he wrote, suggesting imminent layoffs. French Resistance Crumbles in Netflix Debut (Adweek) Netflix broke through some heavy French telecom resistance Monday as it debuted its video-on-demand service in six more European countries. One of France’s major telecom companies, Bouygues, announced that it would integrate Netflix in its TV set-top boxes starting in November, according to the Nasdaq news. Deadline Hollywood Bouygues is the first such company to partner with Netflix as others have thus far refused, with execs reportedly unable to agree on financial terms. There is speculation that others may be more inclined to follow now that Bouygues has signed on. Before the set-top box option becomes available, French users will have access to Netflix (beginning at €7.99/month) via the other standard methods. Variety Netflix has been facing waves of criticism and resistance from local industry watchers. Many of them predict the service could weaken France’s film and TV industry by hurting local TV channels, including paybox group Canal Plus, which are compelled to invest a percentage of their revenue in financing Gallic and European content. GigaOM This is the start of a major push by Netflix into mainland Europe, with other countries such as Germany and Belgium also set to get Netflix this month -- Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands have had it for a year or two. As its European operations are based in Amsterdam, Netflix gets to sidestep requirements for 40 percent French-originated content, though it has commissioned a local drama series called Marseille. [emailonly]{{{ jodslot01 }}}[/emailonly] Microsoft Pays $2.5 Billion for Minecraft Maker Mojang (THR) Microsoft has bought Mojang, the Swedish firm behind popular video game Minecraft, for $2.5 billion. The deal, announced by Xbox boss Phil Spencer and expected to close by the end of 2014, will see Microsoft take over Minecraft’s massive user base, estimated at some 100 million worldwide. Mojang brought in more than $100 million in profit last year. GigaOM Financially speaking, the deal looks to be within the normal range for such acquisitions, at least in this somewhat over-heated tech environment, and taking into account Microsoft’s desire to expand its Xbox gaming division. Mojang had revenue of $330 million last year and a profit of $130 million, which makes the sale price about 7.5 times revenues. Many analysts say the game should fit in fairly well with the software giant’s other franchises, such as Halo or Age of Empires. Variety With the Microsoft acquisition, Mojang founders Markus Persson (a.k.a. “Notch”), CEO Carl Manneh and Jakob Porser -- who launched the game in 2009 -- are leaving the company. Microsoft said its investments in cloud and mobile technologies will let Minecraft players benefit from “richer and faster worlds,” as well as more powerful development tools. The tech giant said it plans to continue to make Minecraft available across all the platforms on which it is available: PC, iOS, Android, Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation. Authors United Calls on Amazon Board Members to Take A Stand (GalleyCat) Authors United, a group of more than 900 authors including Stephen King, Malcolm Gladwell and Suzanne Collins, which has been pushing Amazon to end its dispute with Hachette, has sent a letter to the Amazon board of directors asking them: “Do you as an Amazon director approve of this policy of sanctioning books?” GigaOM Following its letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Aug. 9, Authors United posted the new letter online Monday. Amazon’s “sanctions have driven down Hachette authors’ sales at Amazon.com by at least 50 percent and in some cases as much as 90 percent. These sales drops are occurring across the board: in hardcovers, paperbacks and eBooks,” the letter states. As of Monday morning, the letter was signed by 1,069 authors. NYT “Efforts to impede or block the sale of books have a long and ugly history,” reads the letter. “Do you, personally, want to be associated with this?” Amazon takes its good name seriously. In the Harris Poll of corporate reputations, it once again took top honors this year. But that prestige is taking a bit of a beating as the fight with Hachette drags on. The disastrous reception of Amazon’s first smartphone, which sold so poorly that the company was forced last week to drop the price to 99 cents, has been another blow. The letter warns the directors that the discontent might spread. Fox News Hires Michelle Fields as Contributor (BuzzFeed) At age 24, political commentator Michelle Fields was on Details’ “Next Wave of Political Pundits” list. Now, she’s been hired as a paid contributor by the network and will appear on Fox News and Fox Business programming. TVNewser Fields, a correspondent for PJ Media, has been a regular on Cashin’ In on the weekends. She started at WTXF in 2005 as a general assignment reporter. She has also worked at KOKI in Tulsa and WICS in Springfield, Ill. Marin Cogan Named New York Mag Contributing Editor (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media) New York magazine has named Marin Cogan as a contributing editor, digital editor Ben Williams and print editor Jared Hohlt announced on Monday. Cogan will cover politics, policy and political culture for a weekly reported piece for the Daily Intelligencer vertical and will write features for the print magazine. Al Jazeera’s Digital News Venture AJ+ Launches With Dedicated iPhone App (GigaOM) This week, the Qatar-based Al Jazeera is launching AJ+, a new news network that doesn’t live on TV, or even the Web, but produces content for and hopes to engage its audience through an iPhone app. The new AJ+ app, which officially launched on the app store Monday morning, is organized around topical stacks of cards, with stacks ranging from Ferguson to ISIS and from police brutality to marijuana legalization.
