More Employed in October, But Unemployment Rate Stays Steady

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that nonfarm payroll employment went up by 151,000 last month, while the unemployment rate stayed put at 9.6 percent. That’s been at the same level since May.

The BLS said that the number of long-term unemployed stayed about the same, at 6.2 million. People employed part-time for economic reasons fell by 318,000, to 9.2 million.

Gains in employment were credited to jobs added in mining and service-providing industries. See the full report for more numbers.
