Mobile Game Roundup: Evel Knievel, Frozen Frenzy Mania and More

Are you looking for a new game to play this weekend? You have plenty of new options to try, including X-Mercs, a new turn-based strategy game from Game Insight. X-Mercs challenges players to lead a team of mercenaries through missions while also building their own base. Rhythm game fans also have a new title to try, as Activision Publishing and FreeStyleGames released Guitar Hero Live on iOS. While everyone can download the game’s free trial from the iTunes App Store, the full game unlock is available via the guitar bundle sold in stores, or through in-app purchase. Elsewhere, trivia game fans can try Trivial Pursuit & Friends, a multiplayer trivia game from Gameloft and Hasbro. Finally, Glu Mobile released its latest celebrity mobile game: Sniper X with Jason Statham. The shooting game asks players to complete missions and eliminate terrorists as part of Statham’s paramilitary force. Looking for something else to play? Here’s a look at some additional games released this week. Evel Knievel ($1.99 on iOS) - From Barnstorm Games, this motorcycle stunt game allows players to perform stunts and jumps at Evel Knievel’s famous jump sites. In each event, players tap on the left and right sides of the screen to accelerate or slow down. Levels contain multiple obstacles, including piles of tires, flaming hoops, ramps and jumps. While in the air, players can tap on the left and right sides of the screen to rotate their bike for a safe landing. As players progress and complete missions (like "get two seconds of air time in one jump" or "pass through one flaming hoop"), they’ll level up and can increase Knievel’s stats. Upgrading his strength will prevent Knievel from falling off of his bike when landing, while upgrading his charisma will make coins easier to collect while driving. Finally, upgrading his agility will make the bike easier to control while in the air. Players can spend coins on new motorcycles, which are required to unlock some events. Evel Knievel is coming soon to Android. Pokaboo ($2.99 on iOS) - A level-based puzzle game from GlobZ, Pokaboo asks players to help a ghost fuse colorful dots into larger shapes by swiping to move him across the screen. Only dots of the same color will fuse, and only when every dot of a single color connects will the resulting shape disappear from the screen. While players aren’t limited to a specific number of moves in each stage, each level does have a goal move count, and gamers receive a star if they can complete the level within that number of moves. Pokaboo offers 100 levels across five worlds, which become more complicated as players progress, thanks to the addition of obstacles like immovable objects or walls that shift as players move the ghost. Zombie Deathmatch (Free on iOS, Android) - From Reliance Games, this zombie-themed fighting game allows players to create an army of zombies to take into battle against other zombies. During battle, players swipe or tap on the screen to trigger a variety of attacks, while a special ability bar charges in the corner of the screen. This bar is split into three sections, and by tapping on a filled section, players trigger a reflex-testing mini-game before unleashing a special attack on the enemy. Zombies come in three classes (Brute, Mauler and Striker), each with different strengths. Players can purchase weapons and armor to make their zombies stronger. Please, Don’t Touch Anything ($4.99 on iOS) - After the game’s original release on PC, Four Quarters and BulkyPix have released Please, Don’t Touch Anything on iOS devices. The puzzle game places players in front of a console with a red button and allows them to experiment with objects in their environment to receive different "enigmas" or endings. The game offers 25 different enigmas to discover, including three that are exclusive to the iOS version of the game. Zombie Match Defense ($1.99 on iOS) - A match-three lane defense game from shovelware games, Zombie Match Defense challenges players to defeat zombies before they can reach the heroes at the left side of the screen. Each lane is filled with multiple colors of brains, and players swap the locations of these brains to create lines of three or more matching symbols, which are then removed from the screen. Zombies move closer to the heroes with every move, with the goal being to make matches with the brain(s) the zombie(s) are currently standing on to eliminate them from the board. Players aren’t required to create a match with each move, allowing users to create traps for zombies to defeat them. Players earn cash as they complete levels, which can be spent on power-ups to use in future levels. For instance, one power-up allows users to freeze a zombie and prevent it from moving for one turn, while another allows users to pick up any one brain symbol (even if it holds a zombie) and move it to the far right side of the board. Once players purchase these powers, they must activate them while playing by completing a specific task, like making a match with four brain symbols, or making a match in a T or L shape, as examples. In addition to the game’s level-based mode, which focuses on clearing a specific number of zombies in each stage, users can play endless games to see how long they can survive. Zombie Match Defense is coming to Android later this year. Impossible Super Ninja (Free on iOS) - From Doublesmith GmbH and Thumbspire, Impossible Super Ninja is a level-based jumping game, challenging players to help a ninja clear towers by tapping to jump or double jump while the ninja moves left or right automatically. Each environment is filled with obstacles to avoid, like saw blades and spikes (among others), as well as Diamonds to collect. Gamers have a limited number of lives to clear each tower. If players run out of lives, they can start the tower over from the beginning (towers have multiple floors to clear), or watch a video ad for additional lives. Players can also unlock unlimited lives via in-app purchase. As players collect Diamonds in bulk, these can be spent on fortune cookies containing new playable characters. Gamers can replay cleared towers (or even portions of towers), as well as watch video ads, to earn extra Diamonds. Individual characters are also available to purchase with real money. Family Guy Pinball ($1.99 on iOS, Android, Amazon) - From Zen Studios and Fox Digital Entertainment, this first of four new pinball tables based on popular television shows stars the Griffin family and challenges players to complete objectives based on popular Family Guy episodes (the game offers voice clips and sound effects from the show). For instance, players will help Peter fight the Giant Chicken, help Chris catch the Evil Monkey living in his closet and help Stewie save Rupert from demise, among other goals. Side quests are also available, featuring additional characters from the show, like Bertram and the Quahog 5 News team, as examples. Family Guy Pinball offers single-player games, as well as local multiplayer using the same device. Gamers can track their high scores on the game’s scoreboard (which offers support for Facebook connectivity to compare scores with friends), and they will be able to unlock achievements, as well as leader-board avatar images, as they play. To be specific, leader-board avatar images are unlocked by completing specific tasks while playing, like hitting the Evil Monkey in Chris’ mission, as an example. While Family Guy Pinball is available as a stand-alone app, players can also purchase the table as DLC in the Zen Pinball app. American Dad! Pinball ($1.99 on iOS, Android, Amazon) - The second of four new pinball tables from Zen Studios and Fox Digital Entertainment, American Dad! Pinball sees players exploring the Smith family home and completing quests with characters from the show (the app includes voice clips and sound effects from the series). Players can assume Roger’s different personas in the table’s different game modes and manipulate the National Threat Level, which changes the way missions progress. Outside of the main pinball table, players can activate a first-person shooting mini-game with Stan at the Fun N’ Gun Shooting Range. Like in Family Guy Pinball, players can unlock leaderboard avatars by completing specific tasks while playing, and they can compete against their friends in local multiplayer games. Achievements are also available to unlock, and players can track their high scores on the game’s scoreboards. American Dad! Pinball is also available to purchase as DLC in the Zen Pinball app. If players purchase and play more than one of these four new tables, they can track and combine their high scores from these tables to form their overall "Party Score." This score can be compared with friends’ scores. In addition, as players complete games on one pinball table, they may receive tokens for use on other tables. These tokens give players an extra ball when their game would normally end. This token system is only available in the stand-alone versions of these games. The DLC versions of each game reward users with prizes unique to the Zen Pinball app, including new achievements. Bob’s Burgers Pinball ($1.99 on iOS, Android, Amazon) - This third new table from Zen Studios and Fox Digital Entertainment allows players to complete 15 game modes with the Belcher family, which are based on episodes from the show. The table features a day and night cycle (new game modes become available after the family’s restaurant closes for the day), as well as voice clips and sound effects from the show. Like other Zen Studios titles, Bob’s Burgers Pinball offers local multiplayer, scoreboards for tracking high scores, unlockable leaderboard avatars and the ability to connect to Facebook to combine scores from all four tables in this series. Bob’s Burgers Pinball is also available to purchase as DLC in the Zen Pinball app. Archer Pinball ($1.99 on iOS, Android, Amazon) - The final of four new pinball games from Zen Studios and Fox Digital Entertainment sees players completing tasks like a fight on top of a moving train or a first-person shooting game at the spa, among others. The game features voice clips and sound effects from the show, and supports both single-player games and local multiplayer games. Players can unlock achievements, as well as leaderboard avatars as they play. Players can track their high scores on the in-game scoreboard (and log into Facebook to compare their scores with friends’ scores), and like the other tables in this series, can combine their high scores across tables into a final "Party Score." Archer Pinball is also available to purchase as DLC in the Zen Pinball app. Drill Up (Free on iOS, Android) - From Applava and Ketchapp, Drill Up is an endless survival game, challenging players to escape lava rising from the bottom of the screen by tapping to send their drilling robot between rotating gears on the screen. As players climb, they’ll need to watch out for moving gears (which move across the screen as well as rotate). Elevators may also appear while playing, allowing gamers to skip a few obstacles and continuing playing with a higher score. Games end when players either touch the lava, or miss a shot and send the robot off of the screen. Gamers can collect gems in the world as they play, and spend these gems on new characters (each costs 200 gems). Players will also earn free gems as timed gifts, and they can earn extra gems by watching video ads (when they’re offered). Magic Flute: Puzzle Adventure ($1.99 on Android) - Following the game’s release on iOS, Magic Flute: Puzzle Adventure from LabLike is now available on Android devices. The game was inspired by Mozart’s music and the story of "The Magic Flute" opera. In the game, players help Tamino, a young prince on a quest to rescue a princess using a magic flute. In each of the game’s 32 levels, players slide parts of the environment vertically or horizontally to create a path for Tamino to reach the exit, while avoiding obstacles like cracked blocks or guards along the path. Until Nov. 20, Magic Flute: Puzzle Adventure will be available on Android for $1.99. After this date, the game’s price will increase to $3.99. In addition to the full game, Android players can download a free demo version on Google Play, which includes six of the game’s 32 stages. Guild of Honor (Free on iOS, Android) - Developed by Maius Games, a subsidiary of Netmarble Games, Guild of Honor is an action RPG challenging players to defeat the Darkness attacking the world. Players will first choose to become an archer, knight or mage, each with different specialties, and they can recruit over 360 different warriors to their team. After players begin, they can spend coins, the game’s free currency, to purchase the two heroes they didn’t initially select, and they can activate these different heroes as their playable character between battles. In each single-player dungeon, players’ units automatically move around the environment and attack enemies. Gamers can trigger their hero’s special skills using buttons in the corner of the screen, or turn on "Auto Skill" to allow the hero to use these abilities automatically. As players clear dungeons, they may collect new armor and weapons to make their main hero stronger. As players collect extra units for their team, they can spend extra units to strengthen those they’d like to keep. For social features, players can join a guild or create their own, and compete in guild-specific dungeons. Players can also compete in guild wars against members of other guilds. In addition to guild features like a guild store and guild buff system, players can access the competitive arena for head-to-head battles against one other player, among other challenges. Additional challenges, like an Infinite Tower, are coming soon. Undead Assault (Free on iOS, Android) - A side-scrolling endless runner from Artix Entertainment, Undead Assault is an "inspired remake" of the Flash game of the same name from 2005. In each game, the hero runs automatically across the screen, leaving players to tap on jump and attack buttons to avoid obstacles, collect coins or attack oncoming enemies. Players can collect power-ups like shields and coins magnets as they run, while collecting skulls charges a special ability meter at the bottom of the screen. Once filled, players tap a separate button to trigger the attack, which can eliminate multiple enemies in their path. Players can take multiple hits before the game ends. As players collect coins, these can be spent on things like new outfits for their hero, which offer various score and gold boosts to future games. Players can also spend coins on upgrades for the hero’s health (allowing him to take more hits before dying), upgrades that make magnet and shield power-ups last longer while running and upgrades that increase the amount of gold or items players may find while running. While free-to-play, gamers can spend real money on additional coins. Users can also spend $5 to unlock Daimyo (a dog based on the game creator's real-life dog) as a companion in the game. Daimyo follows players as they run and gives users a 3x gold boost to their collected gold. Purchasing Daimyo also unlocks an armor set in Artix Entertainment’s Web MMO, AdventureQuest Worlds. Afterpulse (Free on iOS) - From Digital Legends Entertainment and Gamevil, Afterpulse is a multiplayer shooter that offers free-for-all battles, as well as eight-player team death-match modes. The game allows players to customize their controls to better suit their play style. By default, players use a virtual joystick to move around each environment, and they can swipe to move the camera and aim at enemies. Players then tap to fire their weapons. Gamers can swipe on the weapon symbol in the top right corner of the screen to switch between their main and secondary weapons, and they can tap on this area to manually reload their equipped weapon during battle. Before players can take on other real players in multiplayer battles, they must play training games against the computer until they reach level seven. Players spend energy to access each battle. This energy recharges automatically over time, or players can purchase energy with gold, the game’s premium currency. As players complete matches, they can spend free or premium currency on mystery crates containing new weapons or gear for their soldier, or they can purchase these gear and weapon items individually. The game offers seven types of weapons, including assault rifles, handguns and shotguns, among others. Until Oct. 29, new players who download and login to Afterpulse will receive 250 gold (described as a $10 value) and a four-star Elite Operator Cap, which provides better protection against SMGs. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons ($4.99 on iOS) - From 505 Games, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was originally released on consoles and PC, and it has been customized for touch-screen devices. The game follows two siblings on a quest to find the "Water of Life," which can cure their father’s terminal illness. Gamers will explore environments using two virtual joysticks, with one controller for each character. Players will need to make the brothers work together to complete puzzles and fight bosses on their journey. A new achievement, "One Last Game," is available exclusively in the mobile version of the game. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is coming to Android later this year. Bike Unchained (Free on iOS, Android) - From Red Bull Media House, Bike Unchained is a mountain bike racing game starring real-world athletes, which offers 60 tracks set around the world. In each race, the player’s character moves down the track automatically, and players tap and hold on a button to make them go faster, Players must tap at the right time in relation to the current terrain. When approaching a ramp, players can swipe up on the screen to successfully jump off of the ramp, and they can use a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen to perform tricks while in the air. As players complete races, they will collect experience points items for leveling up their rider and increasing his or her stats, and they can collect new parts for upgrading their bike’s stats. Players may also receive skill badges, which offer additional boosts to a rider’s stats. Gamers can unlock additional riders as they play. In addition to the game’s Campaign mode, "Quick Play" and "Special Contests" modes are also available. Shadowgate ($4.99 on iPad) - From Zojoi and Reverb Triple XP, Shadowgate is a first-person point-and-click adventure game, which was originally released on Apple Macintosh in 1987. The game challenges players to explore a castle and defeat the evil Warlock Lord, and it offers four difficulty levels. For mobile, Shadowgate has been given multiple control options, including an option for the classic on-screen commands, as well as new rooms to explore and puzzles to solve. Players can also turn on a "retro" mode, which toggles pixelated graphics and the original soundtrack from the NES version of the game, among other changes. Shadowgate on mobile offers over 50 achievements for players to unlock. In addition to this release, the four MacVenture Game Series titles (which launched with Shadowgate on the Apple Macintosh)--Déjà Vu: A Nightmare Comes True, Déjà Vu II: Lost In Las Vegas, Shadowgate, and Uninvited--have been released on iPad for $1.99 each. Colopl Rune Story (Free on iOS, Android) - From Colopl, in association with gumi Inc., Colopl Rune Story is based on White Cat Project, a mobile action RPG from Japan, and it offers a "re-imagined: experience for an international audience. Colopl Rune Story challenges players to explore sky islands and clear dungeons while collecting heroes for their team. In each dungeon, players drag their finger around the screen to move and tap to attack enemies. Users can also trigger a hero's special ability by tapping a button in the corner of the screen. As players build their team (the game offers over 200 characters), they can take multiple heroes into each dungeon, and they can swap to different playable characters by tapping on the profile picture of an inactive unit in the corner of the screen. In between battles, players can collect new gear and weapons for their heroes, or upgrade each hero’s stats on their individual "Soul Boards." These boards are webs made up of boosts for things like the character’s attack and defense stats, as examples. Players can unlock each node or boost using the runes they collect in dungeons. Outside of clearing dungeons, Colopl Rune Story offers city-building game play, allowing users to build and upgrade structures that may increase the skills of certain unit classes, give players free currency over time and more. Buildings take time to complete, but these timers can be skipped using premium currency. Kung-Fu Sheep (Free on iOS, Android) - From ActaLogic and MediaAtlas, Kung-Fu Sheep is a side-scrolling combat platformer, challenging players to earn a high score as a kung-fu sheep by collecting shapes and defeating enemies as the world scrolls and the sheep moves forward automatically. Players can tap on buttons to quickly move the sheep left and right, and can tap or tap and hold on the screen to jump over gaps or jump to higher platform levels. Kung-Fu Sheep offers two game-play modes. The first is level-based, with each level being timed, and the speed of the world’s movement increasing after each level. Once players reach level 30, the game’s speed increases indefinitely. In this mode, players collect scrolls to trigger the appearance of enemies in future levels. Meanwhile, the game’s endless mode removes levels and instead sees speed constantly increase as players survive. In this mode, new enemies automatically unlock every 30 seconds while playing. In either mode, players can collect tokens relating to the enemies on the screen, which trigger a score boost the next time one of those enemies is defeated. To defeat enemies, players tap on the enemy’s symbol at the bottom of the screen as they approach one in the stage. Players may be asked to complete a mini-game to defeat the enemy, which sees them tapping on colorful circles in the right order to match a pattern at the top of the screen before time runs out. Wonky Ship (Free on Android) - After releasing the game on iOS earlier this year, Kiz Studios has released this endless survival game on Android devices. The game challenges players to help their spaceship avoid a black hole by tapping or tapping and holding on the left and right sides of the screen to activate the ship’s left and right thrusters. In addition to the black hole, players must also avoid asteroids on the screen. On top of single-player games, players can challenge others in synchronous multiplayer games, which challenge players to be the last surviving ship. These multiplayer games have all players’ ships on the screen at the same time. Frozen Frenzy Mania (Free on iOS, Android, Amazon) - From Storm8, Frozen Frenzy Mania is a match-three puzzle game that follows Piper the Penguin on a journey through Ice Cream Land. The game offers multiple level types. Some may ask players to collect large numbers of specific symbols, while others may challenge players to collect cookies by making multiple matches next to them, as examples. As players match matches with four or more symbols, they create power-ups that can clear whole rows or columns of symbols from the board, among other boosts. Frozen Frenzy Mania offers 120 levels at launch, with more coming in future updates.
