Mike Ditka on Daniel Snyder's PR Problem: 'What's All the Stink?'

Funny how he's looking away from this Redskins situation too. Some people are celebrated for their lack of -- or complete disregard for -- a filter. If you want a true opinion, one without all the flowery crap, just holler at people like Donald Trump, Rosie O'Donnell, Sophia from The Golden Girls, or any uptown socialite with a little booze intake. The NFL has someone like that: Hall of Famer, beloved coach and current ESPN broadcaster (for now) Mike Ditka. For many months, people have stepped to one side or the other regarding whether the Washington football team needs to change its mascot. Some believe it is a regaled tradition in the NFL and that changing that mascot would be criminal. Others take a more human interest angle, arguing that the act of calling someone a "Redskin" is bad enough to warrant a change. Guess which side 'Da' Bears' coach is on... The "stink" Mike Ditka was speaking about in an interview with RedskinsHistorian.com is about the Washington Redskins nickname. Every once in a while, the story comes up because of a protest, statement, or something stupid done by team owner Daniel Snyder. This time, Phil Simms' commitment to not using the name during CBS Sports telecasts was huge news that prompted a follow-up interview. And so, Ditka said this (as noted by Yahoo Sports): It’s so much [expletive] it’s incredible. We’re going to let the liberals of the world run this world ... It was said out of reverence, out of pride to the American Indian. Even though it was called a Redskin, what are you going to call them, a Brownskin? This is so stupid it’s appalling, and I hope that owner keeps fighting for it and never changes it, because the Redskins are part of an American football history, and it should never be anything but the Washington Redskins. That’s the way it is. Yes, sports fans. "Brown skin." He just said that. Moving on... It’s all the politically correct idiots in America, that’s all it is. It’s got nothing to do with anything else. We’re going to change something because we can. Hey listen, I went through it in the 60s, too. I mean, come on. Everybody lined up, did this. It’s fine to protest. That’s your right, if you don’t like it, protest. You have a right to do that, but to change the name, that’s ridiculous. Change the Constitution — we’ve got people trying to do that, too, and they’re doing a pretty good job. While someone mails Da' Coach Congressional approval ratings regarding this "pretty good job," there still has not been any comment from Ditka's employer ESPN. Before they response, ESPN brass should mind this "admiration" for Snyder: I admire [Snyder] for it. Really, I think it’s tradition, it’s history, it’s part of the National Football League. It was about Sammy Baugh and all the guys who were Redskins way back then. I didn’t think that Lombardi and Halas never had a problem with it, why would all these other idiots have a problem with the name? I’m sorry. I’m not very tolerant when it comes to the liberals who complain about everything. Man, what a Ditka!
