The iPad just got run over by a Microsoft-branded metaphorical reindeer. Sort of.
Just in time for the holiday shopping season, the anti-Silicon Valley company has chosen one of the most obnoxious Christmas songs to showcase its promising new tablet. Set to the tune of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” Microsoft calls out the iPad by name while contrasting it with the Microsoft Surface Go.
The 30-second spot, which was created by McCann and stars a young girl who dreams of being an an astronaut, coder or marine biologist, showcases the Go as a go-to device for students.
The Go, which debuted in August, marks the latest in a string of laptops and tablets from Microsoft that have received rave reviews. It’s also far cheaper than Apple’s iPad Pro, which costs twice as much.
Like the 1979 song by Elmo and Patsy, the ad is likely to get stuck in your head. However, the setting and pacing feels more like something you’d see in an ad for a sweater from Old Navy than a tech giant in the middle of a massive rebound. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be effective in making parents and grandparents think twice about whether they really need to shell out a whole lot more money for a shiny silver Apple.
