Megan McArdle Shares Keys To Success After Failure

9780670026142Last night, economics, business, and public policy writer Megan McArdle spoke about her new book The Up Side of Down: Why Failing Well Is the Key to Success at Sixth & I in partnership with Politics & Prose. McArdle started out by sharing a personal experience of her 2 years of unemployment following business school.

“I really was extremely miserable,” she said. “Being unemployed is about the worst thing that can happen to you.”

Citing research from Germany, where citizens are offered lavish benefits, McArdle said that “after people are widowed, they get sad but then they habituate and five years later they are about as happy as they were before. Same with divorce. If you look at unemployment, it goes down, and just stays there. Unemployment is about the worst thing that can happen to you in a modern democracy short of death or dismemberment.”

While much of the book looks at failure outside of employment issues, McArdle argues that you have to learn how to harness the power of any failure to find success. Issues such as blame, punishment, and forgiveness are all addressed in the book. Exactly how to do so you ask? You’ll have to read it to find out!

And in case you missed it, Double X Gabfest that was initially planned for tonight has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 25, same time and place.
