Mario Bros. fans, rejoice! A new film bumper called “Mario”, that features the overall-clad Italian in real life, is spreading like wildfire this week after being showcased at SXSW.
The bumper begins with a voiceover. “I was lying on the grass; a turtle walked right up to me and goes, ‘How many people are you willing to step on to get what you want?'” Then things begin to spiral out of control into an indie, druggie, hipster extravaganza. Mario is bummed out after losing his girlfriend, Peach. He does a few too many mushrooms and tries to get Peach back, but when she tells him, “It’s game over”, he really goes crazy after taking some invincible tablets. This really is a whole new twist on the story of Mario, and I, for one, love it! William Goodman at CBS News loved it too. He writes, “The short bumper is so good it’s hard to imagine the actual films of SXSW topping it. Too bad it will never be in theaters – I would even shell out plenty of gold coins to see it.”
The bumper was written and directed by Joe Nicolosi. According to his Vimeo account he is responsible for a number of the SXSW promos, including The Line, a fun short where a girl and a guy go through an entire relationship while waiting in line for a film; Knitta Please, a funny knitting documentary parody; Constellations, a funny short with a film guy finding all his favorite movies in the constellations; and Midnight, his first SXSW bumper project, a super bloody, zombie gorefest.
All of Nicolosi’s bumpers are pretty great, it’s worth visiting his Vimeo account to check them out. But the Mario bumper is definitely getting the most coverage over the last couple of days. What did you think of it? If they made it into a real movie, how many gold coins would be willing to pay to see it?
