Singer-Songwriter Janelle Monáe Dazzles on the Cover of Marie Claire’s ‘Fresh Faces’ Issue

One of five separate covers

For a spectacularly styled fashion magazine cover, look no further than the May issue of Marie Claire, hitting newsstands April 18. All five “Fresh Faces” covers are notable for the wardrobe selections, especially the one featuring singer-songwriter and Moonlight actress Janelle Monáe.

Her thoughts in the accompanying feature about women earning their proper due in the 21st century are equally sizzling:

“People have to start respecting the vagina. Until every man is fighting for our rights, we should consider stopping having sex. I love men. But evil men? I will not tolerate that. You don’t deserve to be in my presence. If you’re going to own this world and this is how you’re going to rule this world, I am not going to contribute anymore until you change it. We have to realize our power and our magic. Because I am all about black-girl magic, even though I’m standing with all women. But this year? This year, I am so carefree black girl.”

The other “Fresh Faces” featured with their own covers are actresses Aja Naomi King, Alexandra Daddario, Emily Ratajkowski and Zoey Deutch. This is the fourth year Marie Claire has put out a “Fresh Faces” issue.

The fashion editor for the issue is Alison Edmond. Monáe is wearing on the cover a dress by Alexandre Vauthier, earrings from Tiffany & Co. and a ring created by Messika Paris. Photography by Nicolas Moore.
