Steven Heller writes about the ineffectual and overused adjective “nice” in his artile The N Word over at AIGA’s online journal of design. To describe something as “nice” is to damn with faint praise, whether your talking about your date from last night, your friend’s newly renovated apartment or responding to someone’s design or artwork.
I’ve personally found it hard to resist the intial “It’s really nice” summation, and often find myself stumbling to correct myself and hone in on identifiable details of the thing I’m talking about. Nice is easy. Real feedback is hard.
