Mad Magazine Mascot Un-Endorses Obama

Juvenile slapstick magazine Mad made a breathtaking political statement on the cover of its forthcoming May issue. Mascot Alfred E. Newman signals his disenchantment with President Barack Obama by altering his “I [Heart] Obama” shirt with a sharpie. The modified shirt reads “I [Heart]’ed Obama.”

Conservative media watchdog blog NewsBusters wonders if Newman’s un-endorsment reflects a broader, unacknowledged disenchantment with the president in the mass media.

We won’t jump to conclusions so quickly, especially because Newman has seldom clearly represented the political views of Mad‘s tongue-in-cheek editors, who often show him on the cover doing patently foolish things like urinating in public, undergoing medieval brain surgery, or blowing a call as a baseball umpire.
