Longtime Editor Dan Capell Dead at 64

Dan Capell, the longtime editor of Capell’s Circulation Report, died Jan. 11 after a battle with cancer, his family said. He was 64.

For 28 years, Capell edited his eponymous and authoritative newsletter, which tracked the consumer magazine industry. He began his circulation and direct marketing career at Time Inc., starting at Life magazine and rising to circulation director for Sports Illustrated.
He later served as vp, circulation for Newsweek, where he also functioned as vp, venture development. In 1996, he was inducted into the Direct Marketing Association’s Circulation Hall of Fame.
Capell is survived by his wife, Kathy; his son, Matt; and sisters Nanette and Carolyn and their husbands.
A celebration to honor Capell will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at Annie Moore’s, 50 E. 43rd St., New York, NY. Remembrances may be shared at the following Web site: memorialwebsites.legacy.com/dancapell. The Capell family asks that donations be made on the site in lieu of flowers.
