LOL Cats & FAIL Blog's New 'Bag Of Misfits' Reality Show A Comedy FAIL

Today the Cheezburger Network, the same people who brought you the ever-adorable LOL Cats and epic FAIL Blog, launched a new reality comedy video site called 'Bag of Misfits'. The Bag of Misfits tagline, "Adventures in Street Comedy", gives you an idea of the type of content they will be publishing - Tom Green-style, in your face, improv comedy goodness. Sounds great, right? So what's the problem? The first few clips released by Bag of Misfits just aren't all that hilarious. I'm gonna go out on a limb and call the Cheezburger Network's new launch one big comedy FAIL. Now, before I start talking smack about Bag of Misfits, I must say that I am a big fan of the Cheezburger network in general and there will always be a place in my heart for LOL Cats and FAIL Blog. However, I'm not quite sure what they were thinking with their choices for the first few videos uploaded. I'll admit that the first video, about the launch of Bag of Misfits, was a little bit funny, but it wasn't anything shocking, surprising or original. Canadian comedian Paul Telner walks around the street asking people if they are excited about Bag of Misfits and, of course, nobody knows what he is talking about. Next we are served up with a Craigslist crank call video from Ed Bassmaster. Again, I guess it is a little funny, but as the first official comedy video uploaded to the site after it's launch I would expect a lot more. I would expect Jerky Boys-quality comedy from a brand new crank phone call clip brought to you by the Cheezburger Network. This just didn't do it for me. Finally, the third clip uploaded today showcases Peter Coffin spreading ashes of a dead loved one on the city streets. In theory I guess it's a good idea. However, what makes these sorts of sketches really funny is the reaction of passers by, and in this clip we don't get any fun responses. Check out the video below to see what I mean. It seems that I'm not the only person who has had this reaction to the Bag of Misfits content. Check out the ratings on each of the videos and you'll find that a lot of people gave them the thumbs down. So far, Peter Coffin's clip has 26 thumbs up and 14 thumbs down; Ed Bassmaster's clip has 19 thumbs up and 10 thumbs down; and Paul Telner's launch clip has 14 thumbs up and 7 thumbs down. About 50% of the number of thumbs-uppers gave the clips a thumbs down, and that's not a great way to start out. I'm not going to give up on Bag of Misfits just yet, as I absolutely love reality comedy. However, I hope that we will see some slightly more hilarious content in the future. According to the Bag of Misfits contributors roster, other contributors besides those mentioned will include Tom Green (woo!), Rad Girls, Robotic Bees, Nadia G, Don Sibley, Eric Schwarz, Jack Vale, Stuckey and Murray and Sam Burns. NewTeeVee reported that contributors are selected to participate. They handle their own production, but earn money via revenue sharing. According to Mashable, Ben Huh, founder of the Cheezburger Network said, "We would love to be the Saturday Night Live of reality humor, where people who want to be stars will submit their content and hopefully we'll discover new talent."
