Livefyre Buys Social Analytics Platform Realtidbits

Plans to boost social tools for publishers

Livefyre, a real-time social conversation and curation platform, announced it has acquired Realtidbits, a 6-year-old provider of real-time commenting and analytics services to online publishers including The CW Network, Thomson Reuters and Dow Jones Local Media Group.

Livefyre’s primary interest in Realtidbits was for its analytics tool, which evaluates social interactions around the Web for its customers. In the deal announcement, Livefyre founder and CEO Jordan Kretchmer said Livefyre would integrate the tool into its own Livefyre StreamHub. Launched in 2012, StreamHub lets publishers communicate with readers through comments and live chats and the like as well as add social media commentary to their content.

Livefyre plans to discontinue Realtidbits’ other social commenting products in the coming weeks and migrate customers of those products to Livefyre’s own social commenting tools. 

“Our goal at Livefyre is to provide complete solutions for everything our customers need to create innovative social experiences for their audiences,” Kretchmer said. “This acquisition brings key product capabilities to our customers and strengthens our position as the leading social conversation, curation, and community platform provider.”

Realtidbits’ five-person staff, including co-founder and CEO Kelly Abbott, will join Livefyre, which will expand to San Diego, Calif., where Realtidbits is based. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

This is the second acquisition this year for Livefyre, which bought social storytelling platform Storify in September. Founded in 2009, the San Francisco-based firm claims more than 550 customers, including AOL, Condé Nast and Universal Music Group.
