Agency reports also called out as incomprehensible

The Federal Communications Commission, the independent agency in charge of regulating the fast-moving communications industry, took a beating from a number of lawmakers about its own poor communications. Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle took aim at the FCC’s website, which was redesigned a year ago.

The comments were made during an oversight hearing before the House Subcommittee on Communications Technology, which focused on complex technological tasks on the FCC’s agenda such as auctions to free up more spectrum for wireless services. 

Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), chairman of the subcommittee, opened up the door when he asked the FCC to point out where on its website TV stations could find information about the new rule to put political files online in 22 days.

Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) did a search on the FCC site for another issue but didn't find what he was looking for. 

It isn’t only the GOP having trouble with FCC communications. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), a ranking member of the subcommittee, told the FCC commissioners that the agency needs to do a better job with its many reports. “I don’t know who reads them or who understands them,” Eshoo said.

The comments about the FCC website and communications weren’t limited to the hearing room, drawing a number of tweets and retweets. Wrote one tweeter: “Have you ever tried to use the FCC website? Ridiculous. They don’t even have their rules on it.”

Maybe the rules are on the FCC website, but finding it could be epic.
