<em>LAT</em>'s Meyer Says "So Long"

We told you last Tuesday that Los Angeles Times national security reporter Josh Meyer was moving on to a new gig at Northwestern University's Medill journalism school. Now, we have a bit more info about his somewhat surprising departure after 20 years with the LA Times. In an email to friends and colleagues on Friday, Meyer says that he will continue to write while co-directing a new program at Medill DC: Besides lecturing in national security studies, I'll be dreaming up-and overseeing-investigative projects for Medill's crack teams of post-graduate students. And I'll be working hard to expand the initiative into something that will play a key role in the urgent effort to figure out how to best teach-and do-the all-important kinds of national security journalism in this changing news environment. Beyond writing and running Medill's new investigative program, Josh has also formed his own company, Deep Background Inc. Find out more in his email after the jump. Big news! I'm sorry for the late notice but today is my last day at the Los Angeles Times/Tribune after 20 great years, the past 10 covering national security and the war on terrorism. I'd like to keep in touch via my new coordinates below, and to tell you about some exciting new ventures that will allow us to continue to work together. First, my apologies if you get this more than once. I'm out of time before and can't double check the list. I'm sad to be leaving such wonderful colleagues, but thrilled to be launching and co-directing a National Security Journalism Initiative here in Washington for Northwestern University's Medill journalism school. I'm also going to continue writing and reporting myself, so please keep me in mind when you, or someone you know, needs an experienced, prize-winning journalist who knows WashingtonÂ—and the global world of national security-inside and out. And I plan to do some consulting, using my investigative journalism and national security experience in behalf of media outlets, academic institutions, corporations, governments and counter-terrorism agencies. I've formed Deep Background Inc. to best leverage my many thousands of contacts and sources worldwide. We'll provide freelance writing, editing and investigative reporting services but also detailed, highly effective (and discreet) back-grounding of individuals, firms and other entities and expert advice on a wide range of media and national security issues.
