It is often said that life events such as relationships, engagements, and marriages are not “official” until they are announced on Facebook, but does that apply to recognition as a sovereign state?

Facebook joined the 105 countries that officially recognize Kosovo, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, Slate reported.

Prior to Facebook’s declaration, its users in Kosovo had to register for their accounts as citizens of Serbia, Slate reported, but Minister for European Union Integration Vlora Citaku said in a tweet, “Facebook recognizes Kosovo as a state,” and Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said in a statement that he “was informed by senior Facebook executives … about including Kosovo in the global social network.”

Some 200,000 Facebook users will be affected, Radio Free Europe reported, according to Slate.
