LA Smartphone Radio Project Among Knight Foundation Mobile News Challenge Winners

Tomorrow, eight lucky enterprises from around the country will share information live via the Web about mobile projects that claimed a total of $2.4 million in grant money from the Knight Foundation. The group includes RootIO, an LA App led by Chris Csikszentmihalyi and Jude Mukundane.

RootIO is receiving $200,000 from the foundation to continue working on an open-source toolkit that allows users to radio-broadcast using a Smartphone and transmitter. From this morning’s announcement:

The project will be piloted in Uganda in partnership with the Uganda Radio Network, UNICEF Uganda and UNICEF Innovation Unit.
