Kevin Eubanks Off the ‘Tonight Show’

The New York Times reports that “Tonight Show” bandleader Kevin Eubanks won’t be sticking around when Jay Leno resumes his late night mantle from Conan O’Brien — proving that as much as the “Tonight Show” resembles the Titanic these days, at least the band won’t be going down with the ship.

From the Times:

Mr. Eubanks has told colleagues on the show that he will definitely leave his post as leader of what will be a reconstituted “Tonight Show” band (after its brief run as the “Prime Time Band” on Mr. Leno’s 10 p.m. weeknight show) after an interim transition period starting March 1.

That’s when Mr. Leno will return to “Tonight,” after the departure last month of Conan O’Brien. Mr. Eubanks is in the process of working out the exact terms of his departure, a colleague on the show said, and no specific date is set yet for his last night with Mr. Leno.

Leno may be losing his band leader, but at least he’s got a spiffy new logo.
