Release in full: KCRW AND NPR *ONLINE* COLLABORATION "UPCLOSE" CONTINUES WITH MATTHEW WEINER AND ALAN BALL Next two live events Oct. 12 & Oct. 14 @ NPR West hosted by KCRW's ELVIS MITCHELL Live events, creating exclusive online content, feature NPR/KCRW on-air personalities in conversation with cultural figures Public radio station 89.9 FM KCRW-Santa Monica and NPR announce the next two events in their ongoing series UpClose, a series of live events featuring conversations with cultural figures available at www.kcrw.com/upclose and www.NPR.org/upclose. These live events are recorded on stage before an intimate audience at NPR West in Culver City, CA, and feature on-air personalities from both KCRW and NPR, in conversation with some of the leading figures in popular culture who pass through the station's and network's portals every day. The events are recorded and edited into several segments for both organizations' web sites. A very limited number of tickets will be available for sale to the public, online only, beginning Wed., Sept. 22 ($35 general admission seating; www.kcrw.com/upclose). Doors open at 7:30; event begins at 8 pm, no late seating. On TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12, ELVIS MITCHELL, host of KCRW's The Treatment (and newly named co-host of Roger Ebert's "At the Movies," returning to PBS), engages in conversation with Emmy Award-winning Writer/Director/Producer MATTHEW WEINER, series creator and executive producer for the AMC drama "Mad Men," now in its fourth season. On THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, Mitchell welcomes Academy and Emmy Award-winning Writer/Director/ Producer ALAN BALL. He is the creator and executive producer of HBO's "True Blood" and "Six Feet Under." Matthew Weiner and Alan Ball's two television series -"Mad Men" and "True Blood" respectively-have certified them as cultural tastemakers, taking worlds we think we've seen and reinterpreting each in a novel-and novelistic-fashion. Elvis will talk to Weiner and Ball about what inspires them as writers, the trajectory of their careers, their views on the success of these TV series and what this success means to them personally, professionally and for the future of television. Matthew Weiner's "Mad Men" follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising. Since its 2007 debut, the series has garnered three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series; three consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Drama Series; and broadcasting's highest honor, The Peabody Award. Prior to "Mad Men," Weiner served as an executive producer and writer on HBO's "The Sopranos." The show won the Emmy in 2004 and 2006 for Outstanding Drama Series and garnered Weiner two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Writing.
