Justin Bieber Nets The Most Death Rumors On Twitter [REPORT]

Turns out that Justin Bieber leads celebrities in more than just Twitter followers.

Global social media monitoring company Synthesio conducted a recent study on death rumors on Twitter, and found that Justin Bieber is the musician most often reported to be dead.

As hard as it is to believe, the Canadian pop singer’s death is falsely reported at regular two-week intervals.

The data, collected by Synthesio as part of a wider study looking at the online behaviors of teenage pop fans, revealed that the top reason reported for Bieber’s death was a drug overdose, with crashing his Ferrari at a close second.

To track death rumors on Twitter, Synthesio monitored #RIP celebrity rumor tweets that had been retweeted more than 500 times.

Runners-up as most-reported-dead on Twitter include: Zayn Malik of One Direction, Rihanna, and Chris Brown.

Catriona Oldershaw, Managing Director UK of Synthesio said in a statement,

“Rumors of major celebrity deaths are a constant feature of Twitter… There are a number of reasons these rumors spread. In Justin and Zayn’s case, their young and fanatical fan base is probably one of the major factors, with vocal users quick to pass on information without fact-checking. In terms of where the rumors come from in the first place, wider research indicates that it’s often rival fans starting RIP rumors as a form of trolling.”

Not that it needs to be said, but next time you see an #RIP tweet, be sure to check it twice before retweeting.
