Journalism, Comm Grads In 2009 Found A 'Very Bad Job Market' Awaiting Them

“Stay in school forever. It all goes down hill from here,” one 2009 journalism grad told the class of 2010.

That’s one of the comments from the Cox Center’s “2009 Annual Survey of Journalism & Mass Communication Graduates,” released recently.

Only 46.2 percent of 2009 bachelor’s degree recipients had a job by October 31, 2009. In fact, not even all degreeholders got even one job interview—more than one in ten hadn’t been on a single interview by the time they returned the survey.

The job market was, and is, “unlike any that graduates have encountered in the nearly 25 years for which comparable data are available,” the survey said.
