Jobless Claims Rise Another 19,000

The number of claims by first-time filers for unemployment insurance stubbornly stayed high this week, again, rising 19,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 460,000, the Department of Labor reported today. A total of 4.4 million Americans were collecting some form of unemployment insurance during the week ended July 24.

For the week ended July 17, approximately 3/4 of the unemployed collecting benefits, or 3.3 million, were unemployed for 26 weeks or more and collecting federal emergency unemployment compensation, which was recently reinstated by Congress through November.
