Jobless Claims Inch Up

New filings for jobless benefits rose by 17,000 last week according to figures from the Department of Labor released today. However, the four-week average, which smooths out fluctuations (like the Thanksgiving holiday two weeks ago, which could have been responsible for last week’s drop in jobless filings), was down by 7,750.

Wisconsin showed a jump of more than 8,000 filings last week, while California’s claims dropped by 28,000 (this a week after they spiked by 14,000).
