Jets-Steelers Duel Marks Most Watched AFC Championship Game In 24 Years

Although the outcome may have been a bummer for the Gang Green faithful, Jets fans can take some solace in knowing that their team participated in the highest rated AFC Championship Game in nearly a quarter-century.  Our friends over at SportsNewser report that the Steelers 24-19 win over the Jets notched an 31.3 average overnight household rating and 46 share – the best numbers for an AFC Championship since the Denver Broncos ousted the Cleveland Browns in 1987.  Last night’s game outdelivered last year’s AFC title matchup between the Jets and Colts (28.4/50) by 10 percent.

2009 marked the last year that CBS broadcasted the AFC Championship Game in the evening time slot — that year the Steelers downed the Ravens in a game that recorded a 23.8 rating and 37 share (32 percent worse than this year’s contest).  With ratings on the rise each year, its a shock that the NFL is staring down a possible lockout for the 2011 season.
