January Unemployment: 10.6 Percent

January’s national employment rate was 10.6 percent, according to figures released today by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other facts included in the release:

  • Fifteen of the areas with jobless rates of at least 15 percent were in California. Six were in Michigan.
  • Of the 49 metropolitan areas with a population of 1 million or more (as measured by the 2000 Census), Detroit and San Bernardino, Calif., reported the highest unemployment rates—15.6 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
  • A year earlier, the national unemployment rate was 8.5 percent.
