Meet the Journalist Who Landed That Jaden-Willow Smith Interview

ShutterstockJadenWillowSmithThis week’s T magazine Q&A with the son and daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith is the first recent joint published conversation the famous offspring has done. Nice scoop for article author Su Wu, whose piece is being picked up far and wide.

From 2008 until July of this year, Wu was director of research communications at USC. Thanks to her longstanding personal blogging efforts, she also earned during that time a 2012 USC/Getty Arts Journalism Fellowship.

Wu is a regular contributor to the New York Times and artforum.com, as well as the online arts editor for n+1. Earlier this fall, digital magazine Sight Unseen put together a photo essay highlighting Wu’s downtown Los Angeles loft. Our favorite shot by Michael A. Muller has Wu playfully holding up a copy of Interview magazine in front of her face. The caption reads:

“One night at dinner, Nancy (who is one of the designers of Building Block) was scoping an eBay auction of this old Interview, from November 1991. I went home and got it for her. The package had just arrived on the day of this photo so it was sitting on the counter in the kitchen. I love people with really specific taste, who are disappointed mostly and then ecstatic once in a while, and who most deserve to be spoiled.”

Wu earned her journalism Master’s from Northwestern in 2003-2004, after which she interned at Wired before starting out on the PR and freelance side in Chicago. Read-view the Sight Unseen article here.
