Jackie Calmes to Cover White House for The New York Times

cccjackie03252010.jpgThe New York Times‘ Jackie Calmes is joining the paper’s team of White House correspondents, according to a memo obtained by Politico‘s Michael Calderone.

Calmes had previously written about economic policy for the Times. She’s filling in a spot in the Times‘ D.C. bureau left open by the departure of Adam Nagourney for the top spot at the paper’s Los Angeles bureau.

Here’s an excerpt from the memo, which Calderone attributes to “Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet and deputies Rebecca Corbett and Dick Stevenson”:

She does substance. She does politics. She does personalities. And she does them all with enthusiasm, intelligence and the perspective that comes from years on front-line beats.

She is, in short, a natural White House correspondent.
