Is Blackberry Messenger Coming To Other Smartphones?

Earlier this week Boy Genius Report ran an exclusive report that RIM is developing a Blackberry Messenger app for Android and iOS. Blackberry Messenger is an instant messaging app only available on Blackberry smartphones. The app doesn’t require a server login, so as long as the phone is connected to the Internet Blackberry Messenger can send and receive messages.

Unlike Twitter and text messaging, Blackberry Messenger allows unlimited message length, and it supports sending a message to a group of people. While the program acts like text messaging, it isn’t, so the messages you send don’t count against the text message limit of your mobile account, which is why it is so popular. You also get confirmation of when your messages have been received and read, and you can send pictures and audio.

Basically, Blackberry Messenger is a unique app to the Blackberry smartphones, so the possibility that RIM is going to provide a version of it for other smartphones is interesting. Boy Genius did suggest that the version for iOS and Android may not have all of the features that I decribe above, so my guess is that RIM will promote it as an ability to send and receive messages with people who don’t own Blackberries.
