Interactive video fanatics—prepare to be wowed!  Digital media startup Interlude is revolutionizing the world of interactive video with their choose-your-own-adventure-esque online video technology.  Interlude’s technology can be used to create awesome interactive videos that give viewers the ability to choose the path the video will take in real time.  I had the opportunity to talk to Interlude’s CEO and Co-Founder Yoni Bloch about the inspiration behind Interlude, some of the projects it has been used for, and what we can expect from them in the future.

Before we get to my interview with Yoni, take a look at an example of an interactive video project made using Interlude.  You may have seen it before.  It’s Andy Grammer’s music video for “Keep Your Head Up,” which won the prize for Most Innovative Music Video at the MTV O Music Awards earlier this year.  As you watch you can make choices about which direction the video takes in real time.  You can watch over and over and have a different experience each time.

I asked Yoni about the inspiration behind Interlude.  He told me, “I have always been excited about the possibilities of the Internet, especially with respect to engaging millions of people easily, regularly, and in creative ways.  In fact, I even launched my music career by initial posting some of my original recordings online.” [Note: In addition to being the CEO of Interlude, Yoni Bloch is a popular Israeli musician.  Click here to check out one of his great music videos.]

Yoni says, “One thing that I quickly noticed is that despite the growing appetite for video content online, most online video experiences were passive and lean-back, simply replicating the TV experience.  It seemed like a big miss to not find ways to leverage the interactive nature of the online platform to truly engage and excite.  So I started to toy with ideas around what I could do to make my own music videos stand out.  And when I recalled the choose-your-own-adventures of my childhood, I thought it would be fun to let online audiences have a similar experience in real-time with video.”

Yoni and his tech savvy band members put together a platform that could achieve the goal of making the choose-your-own-adventure style of video consumption a reality and the first video they did was with Yoni’s own music.  However, they have moved on to create videos for all sorts of commercial applications from music videos to banks and even a recruitment video for Microsoft in Israel, which Yoni starred in.  Yoni tells me, “We are also now working with the Jonas Brothers on a great documentary that will be featured on AOL, and we are currently speaking to studios and networks about using the platform to develop innovative trailers and promotional materials.”  Interlude is also proven to be great for pre-roll ads, as the interactive experience inspires users to extend their viewing time, watching ads multiple times and even posting and sharing their own versions of the ads with friends.

Interlude has already made an irreversible mark on the interactive video industry and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next!  Have you seen any of Interlude’s videos before?  Let us know what you think about their platform in the comments below.
