Instagram Quietly Began Testing Instagram Lite in Mexico

The slimmed-down Android app uses less data, starts faster

Facebook did it, Messenger did it, and now it’s Instagram’s turn to go Lite.

Facebook confirmed that it began testing Instagram Lite in Mexico this week, with the aim of bringing the slimmed-down version of the social network’s photo- and video-sharing application to more countries later this year.

Josh Constine of TechCrunch reported that Instagram Lite is 1/55th the size of the flagship Instagram app (573 kilobytes, versus 32 megabytes), and it enables users to filter and post photos to the feed or Instagram Stories, view Stories and browse the Explore page, but it does not support sharing of videos or Instagram Direct messaging.

A Facebook spokesperson said, “We are testing a new version of Instagram for Android that takes up less space on your device, uses less data and starts faster.”
