What Is Instagram Bolt?

Did Instagram repeat the mistake its parent company made when Facebook prematurely released its Slingshot video-sharing application? TechCrunch reported that some Android Instagram users were seeing banner ads for a one-tap photo messaging app called Bolt, but the “free” button to presumably download the app took users to a dead Google Play URL.

TechCrunch readers shared the screenshot above with the blog, and TechCrunch also pointed out that an app named Bolt already exists on Google Play, but it is a mobile-calling app with no connection to Instagram or Facebook.

Sarah Perez of TechCrunch also speculated that the banner ads spotted by Instagram users could have been a test of expanding Facebook’s mobile app install ads to Instagram.
