In First Non-Holiday Week, Jobless Claims Are Right Back To 'Normal'

It was too good to last: jobless claims for last week jumped 35,000 to 445,000, or approximately November 2010’s levels, and just a bit lower than the 455,000-ish level claims were hovering at all summer.

The four-week moving average, which smooths out volatility, was 416,500, an increase of 5,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 411,000.

For the week leading up to Christmas, the most recent week data of this kind were available, 9.2 million Americans were receiving some form of unemployment benefits.
