IHOP Has a New, Happier Logo

After more than 20 years with the old one.

IHOP-logoIHOP has unveiled a new logo after more than 20 years of marketing with the old one (to the right). Kirk Thompson, the company’s vp of marketing, told BuzzFeed the old logo looks like a frown. That’s something we’ve never noticed. And clearly it’s something they’ve never noticed either since they went more than two decades before deciding to change it.

According to BuzzFeed, IHOP’s business has been turning around, which the company attributes to menu design, with a greater emphasis on appetizers and sides.

Still, a logo refresh could be a good thing as well, especially when it’s worked into a whole marketing campaign. “To celebrate the launch of the new logo, IHOP restaurants’ ‘Summer of Smiles’ will include a series of events and programs over the coming months to celebrate those who, like IHOP restaurants, help bring smiles to their communities though their efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of others,” said the press release announcing the new logo.

BuzzFeed says the new one looks a lot like the Citi logo. Personally I think it might just be a little bit too much like the old one? There’s clearly a difference, but I’m wondering if it’s significant enough to have the impact that IHOP wants. Thoughts?
