Is Hulu Plus Worth It At Half Price?

Many users are questioning whether Hulu Plus is worth the $9.99 subscription fee and it seems Hulu is asking themselves the same question. Apparently, the online video streaming site is considering cutting the cost of the Hulu Plus subscription service in half.

Hulu hasn’t been performing at the top of its game in recent weeks, with users complaining about the site’s television series episode selection and Fox content being blocked from users accessing the site via Cablevision. Many users are questioning whether Hulu Plus is worth the $9.99 subscription fee and it seems Hulu is asking themselves the same question. Apparently, the online video streaming site is considering cutting the cost of the Hulu Plus subscription service in half.

According to Peter Kafka of All Things Digital, “Hulu is considering cutting the price of Hulu Plus, the subscription service it began testing in early June.” Sources tell Kafka that they are thinking about halving the $9.95 per-month fee, and charging users a mere $4.95.

The reason that Hulu is thinking about slashing the price of their Hulu Plus subscription service was not revealed. However, it’s likely that Hulu viewers just weren’t buying in to it. After all, there is a huge selection of online video streaming services that offer similar plans, including Netflix and Megavideo. The difference? Netflix also offers a huge variety of films and television episodes that Hulu can’t promise and Megavideo pretty much has it all as well (although it can sometimes be annoying to search for movies and television shows using the Megavideo service).

The Netflix streaming-only service is only $7.99 a month and Megavideo’s premium service is $9.99, so if Hulu wants to compete then halving their price is a good move. But is Hulu Plus worth it at $4.95? Ultimately, you’ll have to be the judge of that, but let’s take a look at what the service offers.

Hulu Plus subscribers have access to the current full season of tons of shows, including American Dad!, Bones, Brothers & Sisters, Cougar Town, Dancing With The Stars, Desperate Housewives, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Parenthood, Private Practice, SNL, The Biggest Loser and More. Regular Hulu viewers that haven’t paid for the Hulu Plus service only get to watch the last few episodes of each series. They also have a library of past season of many shows, but not all shows and episodes are included in this offering, as illustrated by the recent Modern Family snafu.

Something that makes Hulu great is the quality of the stream. When you watch on Megavideo, Youku and similar services you can expect bad quality. However, all quality aside do you really want to be limited to the current seasons of each of these shows? What if you want to start watching Modern Family but haven’t seen the last season yet? Where do you have to go to catch up on these episodes before starting to watch the current season on Hulu?

Hulu also touts the fact that their service is available on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. However, that doesn’t really single them out as Netflix also has an application for these devices. Netflix also offers a huge selection of movies, in addition to series, and a DVD by mail service for just a dollar more than their streaming service. But what do you think? Would you pay $4.95 for Hulu Plus?
