After all, job seekers often search for jobs that are out there but why not flip it upside down and show your worth and value so a company can create a position for you? Genius, right? Even better if you’re internal because you can already show off your dazzling skills to your current employer for them to find a fit for you somewhere else.

Yes, we know this is a little perfect worldish and we’re perfectly fine with being idealists! Think of it this way, as Miriam Salpeter points out in the piece, more companies are becoming freelance-focused on project-oriented work for temporary or long-term temporary solutions.

She writes, “It is very possible that you can market your skills to a decision-maker at a company who faces challenges in order to land a job that he or she will create just for you.”

Start by researching your target companies and establishing informational interviews. Learn as much as you can, be a sponge, absorb everything! In addition, she recommends talking with people who previously worked there so they can candidly answer your questions about the company culture.

Figure out the organization’s problems and more importantly, how you can effectively solve them.

She adds:

“One key factor that will make you more marketable: a track record of having solved a similar problem in the past. Most companies will hesitate to take a chance on someone who hasn’t already “been there, done that” when it comes to the challenge at hand.”

The interview process is all about personal branding and selling yourself so you’ll need a clear message with employers in demonstrating your strong expertise in the solid skills you’re pitching. Put your ideas in writing, Salpeter suggests.

Amp up your LinkedIn profile to reflect keywords and skills. “Find groups to join and consistently share your expertise in those places. Post updates frequently and comment on news in your industry so people who follow you will view you as a go-to expert.”

And feel free to get detailed! Create a detailed proposal — this not only shows you deeply understand issues the employer is facing but it demonstrates you know how to solve their problems, too. Include specific examples of your track record along with the time frame and how long it would take to complete the project.

One way to tap into the hidden job market is to plan, research and pitch away by impressing decision makers to the point the only bad move they can make is one that does include bringing you on board!
